Alcorn Hosts Louisiana College in Home Opener

LORMAN, Miss. – Looking to win its home opener for the sixth consecutive year, the Alcorn State University football program welcomes Louisiana College to Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Braves carry over a four-game home winning-streak into Saturday. Alcorn is 74-52 all-time at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium which begins its 27th season as the home of the football program.
 
The Braves opened the 2018 season last weekend at Georgia Tech. Alcorn forced three turnovers in the game as junior Brelion Hollis and freshman Keyron Kinsler scooped up fumbles, while junior Taurence Wilson grabbed an interception.
 
The Alcorn defense allowed GA Tech to score on just 60 percent (3-of-5) of its red zone opportunities. It came after the Braves ranked top-five in the nation in red zone defense last year, letting up scores on just 64.5 percent of trips inside the 20. Alcorn brought back eight starters on defense from last season.
 
Offensively, the Braves used both junior Noah Johnson and sophomore Felix Harper at quarterback. Johnson tallied 51 yards passing on 10-of-15 attempts, while Harper was 5-for-8 for 18 yards. Johnson also rushed for 21 yards on six carries.
 
The last time the Braves opened the season with a loss at Georgia Tech, they bounced back to win the SWAC Championship in 2015.
 
Saturday marks the first game of the season for Louisiana College (0-0). The Wildcats finished 3-7 overall last year and were picked 7th out of 10 in the 2018 American Southwest Conference (ASC) Preseason Poll.
 
LC head coach Justin Charles enters his second season at the helm. The team has not announced a starting quarterback but it will be between sophomore Mason Jordan and West Texas A&M transfer Skyler Bonneau. The Wildcats return their starting running back Aaron Woods for his senior season after he rushed for 601 yards and three touchdowns last year.

NOTES
- Alcorn is 15-11 in home-openers at Spinks-Casem Stadium. Last year, the Braves beat Miles College 50-21.
 
- Alcorn is 1-0 all-time against Louisiana College. The only previous meeting came in 2014 when the Braves won 52-10. Alcorn went on to become National Black Champions that season.
 
- Junior punter/kicker Corey McCullough broke the school's single-season field goal record with 17 made last year. Last weekend at GA Tech, he booted nine punts for a career-high 372 yards (41.3 ypp). McCullough cranked a long of 51 yards and four of his punts landed inside the 20.
 
- The Braves are the four-time defending SWAC East Division champions and were picked to win the division again in the SWAC Preseason Poll. Alcorn is the only school in the history of the league to play in four consecutive SWAC Championship games.
 
- The Braves are ranked sixth in the current HBCU Poll and were receiving votes in the Preseason FCS Poll.
 
- Alcorn garnered 11 Preseason All-Conference selections including senior running back P.J. Simmons who was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Johnson, junior offensive lineman Mustaffa Ibrahim and junior linebacker Trae Ferrell were also named to the Preseason First-Team.
