JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University men's basketball program will be back in action this weekend when it squares off with Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Williams Assembly Center, and Grambling State at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Hobdy Assembly Center.

Alcorn (4-10, 0-2 SWAC) dropped a pair to Texas Southern 87-70 and Prairie View A&M 57-54 last weekend to kick-off SWAC play. The Braves had a chance against PVAMU at the end with the ball down by two points, but the Panthers were able to get a stop. Junior
Maurice Howard reached double-figures in scoring in both games.

Howard, who has not missed a free throw (14-14) this year, averages a team-high 13.5 points per game. He leads the SWAC in three-pointers made per game with 3.3 and is second in minutes (34.3 mpg), third in assists (3.9 apg), fourth in three-point percentage (.389) and fifth in assist:turnover ratio (1.1). Howard has scored at least 20 points three times this year including a career-high 26 against Rust College.

Alcorn leads the SWAC in steals per game with 8.6. Individually, junior Deshaw Andrews leads the conference with 1.9 per outing.

Andrews averages in double-figures with 12.0 points and a team-high 5.6 rebounds per game. He tallied back-to-back 20-plus outings with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Savannah State, and a career-high 26 points and seven rebounds at Mississippi State.

The Braves are going for their first road victory of the season. Alcorn is 4-2 at home this year where it has outscored the opposition 490-355.

Alcorn is 3-3 against both Jackson State and Grambling State under head coach
Montez Robinson who is in his fourth year. Robinson hoists a 33-23 SWAC record and was the 2016-17 SWAC Coach of the Year.

JSU (4-11, 1-1 SWAC) opened league play with a 54-51 victory over Alabama A&M before falling to Alabama State in a tight 59-57 decision. Chris Howell leads the Tigers with 12.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per outing.

GSU (6-9, 0-2 SWAC) posted non-conference wins over Niagara 74-68, Portland 70-58 and Southeastern Louisiana 69-68. However, the Tigers lost to both ASU 74-53 and AAMU 65-60 (OT) last weekend. Dallas Polk-Hilliard averages 12.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per match.
