JACKSON, Miss. – The first conference road games of the season will be played this weekend when the Alcorn State University women's basketball program travels to Jackson State at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Williams Assembly Center, and to Grambling State at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Hobdy Assembly Center.
Alcorn (2-12, 1-1 SWAC) opened conference play last weekend by splitting a pair of match-ups. The Lady Braves beat Texas Southern 53-52 before falling to a hot-shooting Prairie View A&M squad 82-61. Senior
De'Asia Brown averaged 17.0 points over the two games.
The Lady Braves lead the SWAC in offensive rebounding with 16.4 per game. Individually, junior
Diamond Hall ranks third in the league with 3.1 offensive rebounds per outing. Junior
Charisma Walker is top-five in defensive rebounding with 4.5 per game.
Brown leads the team with 10.6 points per game on the year. She scored 15 in the win over TSU before matching her career-high with 19 against PVAMU. In non-conference, Brown had a two-game stretch where she went 5-7 3FG with 19 points against Southeastern Louisiana and 16 points vs. Northwestern State.
Just under double-figures is Walker with 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She's primarily been used off the bench but has given good production both in scoring and rebounding.
The Lady Braves have been bit by injuries all year. Most recently, they lost their starting post player, junior
Toddriana Isler, who went down against TSU. Isler had started all 13 games previously and averaged 8.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game with three double-doubles.
Junior
Jada Hargrove has been a workhorse for the Lady Braves, logging a conference-high 34.6 minutes per game. She's played 40 minutes twice. Hargrove also ranks second in the conference in steals (2.7 spg). She was named to the FIU All-Tournament Team for her standout performances against the host Panthers and New Mexico State.
JSU (5-8, 0-2 SWAC) dropped a pair of tight decisions last weekend, falling to Alabama A&M 58-55 and Alabama State 74-67. The Lady Tigers posted non-conference wins over Central Arkansas 65-56, Akron 74-57 and Illinois-Chicago 72-57. Marniesha Harner averages team-highs of 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
GSU (5-9, 2-0 SWAC) is the defending SWAC Tournament champion and kicked off league play with wins over 80-72 over ASU and 63-51 over AAMU. The Tigers recorded a marquee non-conference win over Indiana 65-62. Shakyla Hills leads the conference in scoring with 18.8 points per game
With a win Saturday, the Lady Braves would begin 2-1 in conference play for the first time since 2014-15. Both games can be heard live on 91.7 FM or wprl.org with Charles Edmond on the call.
