Braves Look to Get Back on Track at Home This Weekend

LORMAN, Miss. – Returning to its home court, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will take on Mississippi Valley State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
The Braves (4-12, 0-4 SWAC) are 4-2 at home this year where they've outscored the opposition 490-355.
 
Junior Maurice Howard, who has not missed a free throw (14-14) this year, averages a team-high 12.9 points per game. He leads the SWAC in three-pointers made per game with 3.2 and is second in minutes (34.2 mpg), third in assists (3.9 apg), third in three-point percentage (.391) and fourth in assist:turnover ratio (1.1). Howard has scored at least 20 points three times this year including a career-high 26 against Rust College.
 
Alcorn leads the SWAC in steals per game with 8.7. Individually, junior Deshaw Andrews leads the conference with 1.8 per outing.
 
Andrews averages in double-figures with 11.3 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game. He tallied back-to-back 20-plus outings with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Savannah State, and a career-high 26 points and seven rebounds at Mississippi State.
 
In a non-conference win over Champion Christian, sophomore Troymain Crosby registered the second triple-double in school history with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He averages 10.7 points per outing on the season.
 
MVSU (3-14, 1-2 SWAC) defeated Alabama A&M 72-63, but has losses to UAPB 64-52 and Alabama State 81-79. The Delta Devils have a non-conference win over Southeastern Louisiana 69-59. Gregory Jones-Rollins leads the team with 12.5 points per game, and Dante Scott scores 12.8 points per outing but has been out with an injury.
 
The first-place Golden Lions (6-10, 3-0 SWAC) are coming off an unbeaten weekend over ASU 82-71 and AAMU 50-49. They posted a non-conference win over Little Rock 75-66 in November. UAPB has the league's leading scorer in Martaveous McKnight who pours in 23.1 points per match and shoots 40 percent from long-range.
 
The Braves swept the season-series over Mississippi Valley State last year and are 6-2 against the Delta Devils under head coach Montez Robinson who is in his fourth season.
 
Alcorn split the season-series with Arkansas-Pine Bluff last year, but won 84-52 at home. The Braves are 5-1 against the Golden Lions under Robinson who is 33-25 in his career in the SWAC.
