Lady Braves Host TSU, PVAMU to Begin SWAC Action

LORMAN, Miss. – A new season begins Saturday for the Alcorn State University women's basketball program when it hosts Texas Southern at 3 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. game Monday against Prairie View A&M at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
Alcorn (1-11, 0-0 SWAC) looks to begin conference play 1-0 for the second straight year after beating PVAMU 73-72 on the road last season. The last time the Lady Braves started 2-0 SWAC was 2011-12.
 
The Lady Braves lead the SWAC in offensive rebounding with 16.8 per game. Individually, junior Diamond Hall ranks third in the league with 3.3 offensive rebounds per outing and fifth in total rebounding with 7.3 per game. Junior Toddriana Isler is fourth in offensive boards (2.6 orpg), while junior Charisma Walker is fifth in defensive rebounding (4.7 drpg).
 
Three different Alcorn student-athletes have registered double-doubles this year including Hall, Isler and Walker.
 
Walker leads the team in scoring with 10.0 points per contest. She's primarily been used off the bench but has given good production both in scoring and rebounding. Walker has scored in double-figures in six of the last seven games.
 
Senior De'Asia Brown tallies 9.6 points per game. She's netted at least 12 points in four of the last seven games. Brown had a two-game stretch where she went 5-7 3FG with a career-high 19 points against Southeastern Louisiana and 16 points vs. Northwestern State.
 
Also just under double-figures is Isler with 9.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per match. Isler has three double-doubles on the year including 14 points and 12 rebounds against Central Arkansas. She opened the year with a career-high 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds against Lane College.
 
Junior Jada Hargrove has been a workhorse for the Lady Braves, logging a conference-high 34.9 minutes per game. She's played 40 minutes twice. Hargrove also ranks second in the conference in steals (2.3 spg). She was named to the FIU All-Tournament Team for her standout performances against the host Panthers and New Mexico State.
 
TSU (4-7, 0-0 SWAC) posted a pair of non-conference wins over Division I schools including a 65-41 victory over Savannah State and a 69-55 win over UT Rio Grande Valley. The Tigers went 13-5 in conference last year en-route to a second-place finish.
 
PVAMU (3-7, 0-0 SWAC) had its non-conference season highlighted by a 67-59 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Panthers ended 12-6 SWAC last year and placed fourth in the standings.
