LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program got contributions from up-and-down the Lady Braves lineup to produce a convincing straight-set victory over the Delta Devilettes.
The Lady Braves (4-15, 2-7 SWAC) saw all 15 healthy and active players receive valuable game action as ten separate Lady Braves logged a kill and 11 different girls recorded at least one dig.
Sophomore Simone Barren led the diverse offensive barrage as she garnered eight kills on the evening, junior Jasmine Chambers averaged an even six assists per set and sophomore libero Mariah Wilmoth was the defensive leader at nine digs while walloping a career-high four service aces.
On the block sheet, Barren fronted the stifling frontline with four blocks as Chambers and junior Daharri Thompkins each pitched in three as well. Redshirt senior Singryd Valadares and sophomore Sydney Joseph both recorded a pair apiece with the purple and gold racking up 12 block assists and two block solos in total.
"The team did a great job tonight. The team worked as a team and worked through the kinks and competed," said Head Coach Melissa Robinson. "I'm very proud of the Lady Braves tonight."

Mississippi Valley State | W, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 27-25)
Alcorn took a small advantage at 5-4 to open the contest but Valley strung together four-in-a-row to go up three (5-8). The purple and gold responded with a 6-1 run of its own to reclaim the upper-hand (11-9). After MVSU went back in front 12-11, Coach Robinson's crew put it all together to put up six consecutive points and eight of the next ten to take command, ultimately winning the first set by a mark of 25-18.
Both teams were evenly matched through eight points of the second set as the score was a stalemate (4-4). Alcorn would then turn up the intensity with a monumental 8-1 onslaught to take a seven point edge (12-5). While the Delta Devilettes would answer with three straight (12-8), the Lady Braves put their foot on the throttle as they routed the visitors to the tune of a 13-5 run and a second set final score of 25-13.
Mississippi Valley State was backed into a two-set hole and came out of the blocks swinging in the third, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The home squad with slowly but surely claw its way back to knot the proceedings at ten apiece. As soon as the Lady Braves thought they were going to pull away at 16-13, the red and green peeled off five straight to go up 18-16. MVSU was able to earn two straight set-point opportunities but failed to cash in as Alcorn came back from down 24-22 to put five of the final six points on the board and come away with its first SWAC sweep of the campaign, 27-25.
The Lady Braves will have ten days to build upon the win before heading north to Jackson for the second SWAC Round-Up of the season hosted by JSU. The team's first game of the Round-Up will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 25 versus Texas Southern.
