MARSHALL, Texas – The Alcorn State University volleyball program got a double-double from sophomore Sydney Joseph to help the Lady Braves quiet Wiley's homecoming crowd during a road 3-1 victory Tuesday night.
The Lady Braves (5-20, 2-12 SWAC) had multiple players tally new season-highs as Sydney Joseph, junior Fiapaipai Iosia and redshirt senior Singryd Valadares all set new benchmarks.
Joseph earned her second double-double of the campaign racking up a season-high 16 kills (4.0 per set) to along with 10 digs (2.5 per set). Iosia toppled four of her previous season-bests with 29 digs (7.3 per set), five points, three aces and two kills. Valadares rounded out the accomplished trio of as she set a career-high with seven blocks (1.8 per set), six assisted and one solo.
With her three aces, Iosia tied Kim Hampton (1994-97) for fourth on Alcorn's all-time service aces leaderboard at 132, sitting only 20 behind Andrea' Horska for first on the list who had 152 from 2000-2002.Â
Junior Jasmine Chambers had an excellent evening, accumulating 37 assists for a 9.25 per set average while also picking up two block assists.
Sophomore Mariah Wilmoth joined Iosia and Joseph among the Lady Braves with double-digit digs as she picked up 13 (3.3 per set) on the evening.
As a team, the purple and gold denied the Wildcats all night long as they recorded 10 blocks, its second-best output of the season.
Valadares led Alcorn with seven blocks, sophomore Simone Barren chipped in six and junior Daharri Thompkins contributed five.
"The girls played hard tonight," said Head Coach Melissa Robinson. "This was a good pick up from the past weekend."

Both teams were evenly matched to begin the contest as they were tied at 12 in the first set. Alcorn took command with a 6-1 run to go ahead 18-13 but saw the home squad rally back to make it a one-point game, 22-21. The Lady Braves put the clamps down on the Wildcats, getting the necessary three points while allowing only one to come away with a first set win (25-22).
The second set was more heavily tilted in favor of Wiley College as it raced out to a 16-10 advantage. The purple and gold surged with a 7-1 barrage to knot the set at 17. The home team made just a few more plays down the stretch than the girls from Lorman and to eke out a second set victory and garner a split through two sets (22-25).
Through the first ten points of the third set, things were deadlocked at five. Alcorn went ahead 9-6, then Wiley went on a run to make it 10-9 before getting squared away again at ten. The Lady Braves built a 18-14 cushion but could not shake the resilient Wildcats as they stood at a stalemate at 18 points as neither side could pull away. After one more tie-up at 20, Coach Robinson's crew got five of seven points the rest of the way to take a two-to-one set lead (25-22).
With the back-and-forth nature of the match setting the tone in the previous three sets, it seemed as if a fifth set would be inevitable when the Wildcats took a five-point edge at 9-4. However, The Lady Braves were having none of that, tying things at 11. Wiley College tried once again to take control as it slowly built a 17-14 lead, but Alcorn was determined to come away victorious. The purple and gold outscored WC 11-2 during the remainder of the set, winning the match and avenging its earlier home loss with a resounding four-set win over the Wildcats during homecoming on its own floor (25-19).
The Lady Braves return home for a two-day homestand versus Alabama State on Sunday and Alabama A&M on Monday with both matches to start at 6 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
