LORMAN, Miss. – Finishing the season on a high note, the Alcorn State University women's soccer program erupted for a 6-3 win on Senior Night over Mississippi Valley State on Friday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
The six goals topped the previous school record of four, set four times.
Junior Mireya Gonzalez netted three goals for a hat trick, and added an assist to lead the way. The Lady Braves also garnered two goals from senior Anjelica Dugan and one from senior Gemma Dunn.
"Hopefully this win will be a momentum builder for us heading into next season. It was important for us to play well today and finish the season strong, especially for the seniors. I was happy with the performance today," said Alcorn head coach Junior Noel.
Gonzalez finished the campaign tied for the most assists in a single season (3), had the fifth-most points in a season (11) and logged the eighth-most goals in a season (4). The forward from Los Angeles, California now sits second on the program's all-time assists list (4) and sixth on the Lady Braves' career points leaderboard (18).
Dugan made her last night in purple and gold a memorable one as she tallied her first two career goals along with her fourth career assist. Dugan's four career assists places her tied for second all-time on the Lady Braves career assists list.
Dunn cashed in her first career goal during her last game at Alcorn, concluding her two-year tenure with four career shots and every one of them being placed on goal.
Senior goalkeeper and part-time midfielder Giselle Rojas tacked on one save during 88:57 minutes of game time. The program's all-time career saves leader will end her illustrious four years on The Reservation with 180 saves, ten more than the now second-highest total.
Seniors Christina Grybos and Aliyah Bachelor both saw action as well. Grybos put together her 20th career complete game while Bachelor played 19 minutes of action.
Sophomore Paula Solé Cabeza capped off her strong second half of the season with an assist on Dugan's second goal in the 68th minute while placing one shot on goal in two attempts.
Freshman Kali Helms came in at the tail end of the match, not recording a save over the final one minute and three seconds of the contest.
Helms concludes a historic first year as the Lady Braves goalie, notching the third-most saves ever recorded in program history for a single season with 124 through 14 matches played.
The New Caney, Texas native started 13 games, participated in the full 90 minutes seven times and saved 69.3 percent of her opportunities in 982 minutes and 10 seconds between the pipes.
"I can't say enough about this group of seniors. They've given their blood, sweat and tears for this school and have always represented the institution in high regard. They never got in any trouble and always tried to do their best to perform for Alcorn. Enough can't be said about them," Noel said.
Rojas, Dunn, Grybos, Bachelor, Dugan and Maya McInnis are all on pace to graduate in the spring. All six were honored in a ceremony at halftime.
