Lady Braves Drop Road Tilt at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – The shots weren't falling for the Alcorn State University women's basketball program Monday as a cold night resulted in a 67-31 outcome for North Texas at The Super Pit.

The Lady Braves (0-3) went 14-for-77 (.182) from the field, including a 2-for-17 (.118) mark from long range. Alcorn relied on its defense to create scoring opportunities, as a plus-five turnover margin resulted in 15 points.

Freshman Nia McCalphia led the team in scoring and set her career-high at seven points off the bench. Junior Aysha Kirkland turned in six points and eight rebounds, and junior Kirdis Clark finished with six points.

The Mean Green (1-1) garnered a double-double from Anisha George who ended with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Destinee McDowell submitted 14 points and nine rebounds.

UNT opened the game on an 8-0 run, but Alcorn responded early. Trailing 10-2, a three-pointer by senior Jada Hargrove sparked a 7-0 run as the Lady Braves trailed 10-9 at the 4:08 mark. However, the Mean Green answered with an 8-0 spurt to push their lead back up to 18-9. UNT extended it to 21-10 at the end of the first.

A defensive second quarter saw limited scoring. Alcorn's defense held UNT to just eight points. Clark knocked down a pair of field goals to keep the team within striking distance as it trailed 29-16 at the half.

The game got away from the Lady Braves in the third quarter. Alcorn shot 3-for-23 (.130) from the field and 0-for-5 from beyond-the-arc. UNT took advantage and upped its lead to 45-22. The Mean Green kept it rolling in the fourth and Alcorn couldn't regain momentum.

Alcorn led the SWAC and ranked eighth in the country with 16 offensive rebounds per game last season. The Lady Braves pulled down 23 on Monday and are now averaging 16.7 offensive rebounds per game this year.

The Lady Braves will wrap-up their season-opening four-game road trip Saturday when they head to UTEP for a 2 p.m. tip. Alcorn will play its home-opener on Tuesday, Nov. 19 when it hosts Louisiana College at 5:30 p.m.
