Lady Braves Sweep Golden Tigers On Senior Night

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program smashed ten service aces while hitting .296 on the evening as it gave a proper sendoff to its five seniors with a straight-set sweep.

The Lady Braves (7-23, 3-15 SWAC) got outstanding performances from four of the team's five seniors in Wanya Morris, Barbara Grubisic Cabo, Daharri Thompkins and Melinda Perrilloux with junior Brianna Davies joining in on the fun as well.

Morris posted career-highs in points (13), digs (7) and service aces (4) while tying her career-best with nine kills and logging a season-high two blocks.

Grubisic Cabo recorded season-highs in aces (3), digs (6) and blocks (2) while averaging 6.3 assists per set (19 total).

Thompkins was an offensive force to be reckoned with against the Golden Tigers, hitting an eye-popping .462 on 13 attacks as eight landed for kills.

Perrilloux topped the squad with nine digs on the night while picking up a career-best three assists.

Davies put forth her best game for last as well, setting new season-bests for kills (4), points (4) and digs (2) while hitting an outstanding .400 on ten attempts.

Tuskegee | W, 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-16)

The purple and gold took control immediately from the first serve, jumping out to a 12-6 and eventual 17-8 advantage during the opening frame. TU would shrink the lead to six (17-11) but Alcorn responded with authority peeling off five straight and eight of the last 11 to take the first set (25-14).

The momentum from the first set carried over into the second and then some, exploding for eight unanswered to start it off. Tuskegee got two straight on the board to make it 12-5 but that was the only instance in which the Golden Tigers had a run of any kind. The Lady Braves poured it on with by outscoring TU 13-4 from then on to cruise to a convincing second set win (25-9).

The third set saw the Golden Tigers show a lot of heart and determination as despite falling behind early (10-5), they rallied all the way back to knot the score at 12. The two teams would trade points back-and-forth over the next six points as the scoreboard read 15-all. Alcorn would put their play into overdrive, leaving no doubt with a 10-1 final push to end the season with a sweep of Tuskegee (25-16).

This was the final game donning the purple and gold for Daharri Thompkins, Barbara Grubisic Cabo, Melinda Perrilloux, Wanya Morris and Singryd Valadares.
