Lady Braves To Face Jackson State Thursday

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program will renew its rivalry with the Jackson State Tigers on the road at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening.
 
The Lady Braves (5-22, 2-14 SWAC) are fourth in the conference for services aces as they average 1.39 per set and have accumulated 128 on the year.
 
Junior Jasmine Chambers is the top server for the purple and gold, leading the club with 26 and notching the eighth-best aces per set average in the conference at 1.28. Chambers has won three SWAC Setter of the Week Awards and is top-five in the league for assists per set (5.86).
 
Reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Week Fiapaipai Iosia checks in at seventh among the SWAC leaders for digs per set as she's averaged 3.36 while adding to her program's all-time digs lead with 262 overall.
 
Sophomore Sydney Joseph continues to front the Lady Braves' scoring attack, as she has 190 kills (2.16 per set) and 212.5 points (2.41 per set), both team-bests.
 
Redshirt senior Singryd Valadares remains the most efficient hitter on the club with a .168 hitting percentage while sophomore Simone Barren still holds down the title of top blocker at 57 (0.62 per set).
 
Scouting the Jackson State Tigers (15-16, 11-3 SWAC)
The blue and white come into the match tied for first place in the loss column as they trail Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M due to playing two fewer conference games.

JSU has been fantastic at gaining the advantage in the hitting percentage department, placing fifth with a .161 percentage while allowing the lowest average to its opponents at .179. The Tigers also rank inside the top-five in the SWAC for assists per set (10.07) and kills per set (11.50) along with top-three in digs per set (13.46) and blocks per set (1.81).

Jylen Whitten has emerged as a bonafide star in the league, topping the leader boards in kills per set (3.25) and points per set (3.66) as well as landing on the backend of the aces per set list (0.27).

Whitten is not the Tigers only stud as Alana Washington fronts the SWAC with 4.29 digs per set while Marina Bianchi Brito is a top-five blocker at 0.80 blocks per set.

Jackson State swept the Lady Braves during its earlier matchup in Lorman on October 10 and now holds the slightest of leads in the all-time series at 33-32.
