LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program had all ten players that made the trip register on the stat sheet in a straight-set defeat to Jackson State.
The Lady Braves (5-23, 2-15 SWAC) were guided by senior Wanya Morris and junior Mae Lewis who tied for the team-high with five kills. Sophomore Jurnee Calhoun set a new season-best for assists (9 / 3.0 per set) and junior Fiapaipai Iosia had her 12th double-digit dig performance of the season, recording 12 digs (4.0 per set).
Morris set new career-highs for both digs (5) and service aces (3), Calhoun logged a season-high four digs, junior Daharri Thompkins had a season-best five blocks and sophomore Havanna Garza tied a career-high with two blocks on the night.

Alcorn got a kill from senior Barbara Grubisic Cabo and an ace by Mae Lewis over the first six points of the first set as the teams were tied at three. JSU then peeled off five of the next six points to move ahead 8-4. The Lady Braves roared back to life as six unanswered points knotted the score at 16-all. The blue and white finished the job from there, scoring nine compared to Alcorn's two to take the set (18-25).
Jackson State took a 7-5 lead before the purple and gold put four straight on the board to hold a 9-7 advantage to begin the second set. Both teams kept the other within striking distance as neither side could gain more than three points of separation over the next 20 points. The Lady Braves and Lady Tigers were at a 18-18 stalemate but JSU used a four-nothing run and 7-2 final surge to come away victorious in the second set (20-25).
The visitors from Lorman came out blistering hot in the third set, peeling off eight consecutive points to start the frame and nine of the first ten to make it 9-1. Jackson State slowly chipped away at the lead thanks to separate 5-0 and 4-0 runs to come all the way back to take the lead and the momentum from Alcorn, 17-16. The Lady Tigers rode that wave of momentum the rest of the set, winning the rivalry match in straight sets (19-25).
Alcorn looks for the season sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Monday with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. in Itta Bena.
