LORMAN, Miss. – Head coach
Melissa Robinson and the Alcorn State University volleyball program have signed a pair of high school outside hitters during the early signing period in preparation for the 2020 season.
The Lady Braves' 2020 class includes freshmen Makayla Wardlaw and Rosa Sheffield.
"This past season we knew we had to take a look at our offense and I believe Makayla and Rosa will help flourish that in the years to come," said Coach Robinson.
Wardlaw, an outside hitter for Park Crossing High School in Montgomery, Alabama, was named a 2018 AHSAA All-Metro Honorable Mention and was given the title of Most Athletic Female at Park Crossing.
"I've known Makayla for quite some time and watching her develop into the player she is now is exciting to watch," said Robinson. "She's a versatile player that can do it all. Great swing, defensive and can also give us some setting opportunities."
Sheffield, an outside hitter for North Garland High School in Dallas, Texas, made the District 10-6A First Team during her senior season after tallying 173 digs, 104 kills, 20 blocks and 17 aces including a season-best 24 kills in a single match.
Her junior year saw Sheffield earn a spot on the District 10-6A Second Team while excelling in the classroom as she was an All-Academic District selection in both 2018 and 2019.
"Rosa's athleticism and leadership are the qualities that most coaches would love to have on their team," Robinson said. "Rosa also brings positive energy into any room she walks in. I'm excited about the impact she will make on the program for years to come."
