Lady Braves Look to Take Down First-Place Southern

LORMAN, Miss. – With the opportunity to knock Southern out of first-place in the SWAC standings, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program will return home Saturday for a 3 p.m. game at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
Southern (9-10, 6-2) has a 0.5 game lead over 5-2 Alabama State, Grambling State and Prairie View A&M. Alcorn (3-17, 2-6 SWAC) will try and use Saturday as a spark to turnaround its season and move up the standings.
 
The Lady Braves are 2-1 against Southern at home under head coach Courtney G. Pruitt who is in her fourth season.
 
Alcorn leads the SWAC in both three-point percentage (.330) and offensive rebounding (16.4 orpg). The Lady Braves are coming off a weekend where they shot .478 (11-23) from long-range at Alabama State and .417 (10-24) at Alabama A&M. Alcorn has led the conference in offensive rebounding for the entire season.
 
In conference games, the Lady Braves have outscored the opposition 149-148 in the fourth quarter.
 
Senior De'Asia Brown paces the offense with 11.7 points per game including 14.8 points in conference. She's scored in double-figures in all eight league games.
 
Junior Jada Hargrove is coming off a big weekend where she tallied 15 points, six rebounds and five assists at ASU, before turning in a career-high 20 points at AAMU. She averages 10.5 points per game on the year and 13.3 in conference. Hargrove has played 40 minutes four times.
 
The Lady Braves returned junior Toddriana Isler this past weekend after she missed the previous five games due to injury. She scores 8.7 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per outing. She has three double-doubles on the season and has started in all 15 games she's played in.
 
Conversely, sophomore Kirdis Clark went down with an injury at Alabama State on Saturday and did not play Monday at Alabama A&M. Alcorn has been bit by injuries all season.
 
Four different Alcorn student-athletes have registered double-doubles this year including sophomore Jamaysha Bernard, freshman Diamond Hall, Isler and junior Charisma Walker.
 
Southern has won games this year mainly with its defense. The Lady Jaguars went on a six-game winning-streak to catapult into first-place but are coming off a 78-61 loss at Alabama State.
 
Southern doesn't have any student-athletes averaging in double-figures, but have used a balanced attack to score. Skylar O'Bear averages a team-high 9.7 points per game, while Brittany Rose scores 9.2 points per outing. As a team, the Lady Jaguars carry a +4.0 turnover margin in conference games.
