ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Alcorn State University men's basketball program will play a nationally televised game Monday at 6 p.m. against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at H.O. Clemmons Arena on ESPNU. It comes after the Braves travel to Mississippi Valley State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the R.W. Harrison Complex.
The Braves (8-15, 4-7 SWAC) are going for the season sweep over both MVSU (3-22, 1-10 SWAC) and UAPB (9-15, 6-5 SWAC). Alcorn topped the Delta Devils 63-57 and the Golden Lions 74-69 at home.
In Alcorn's last outing, junior
Maurice Howard drilled a trio of three-pointers to break his own single-season school record. He enters Saturday with 76 made which topped the 74 he netted last year.
Howard is the league's top three-point shooter. He ranks first in both three-point percentage (.404) and three-pointers made per game (3.3). His .404 percentage stands as second all-time in the school record book.
Howard logs 35.6 minutes per game - also most in the league - and has played 40 minutes six times. He averages a team-high 13.7 points per outing and is 30-for-32 (.938) from the free throw line. In a 76-64 victory over Southern, Howard netted a career-high 27 points and was 7-for-11 from long-range.
Additionally, Howard has drained a three-pointer in 39 consecutive games dating back to last season. It's the third-longest active streak in the country.
As a team, the Braves lead the SWAC in free throw percentage (.682). They rank second in three-pointers made per game (7.2), three-point percentage defense (.317), assists (13.4 apg) and steals (7.9 spg).
Alcorn is going for its first road victory of the year. The Braves are 8-3 at home this year where they've outscored the opposition 822-662.
Aiding the attack is sophomore
Troymain Crosby who averages 11.0 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game. Junior
DeShaw Andrews averages just under double-figures with 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per outing. Andrews also ranks top-five in the SWAC in steals with 1.6 per game.
MVSU is looking to snap a nine-game skid. Its lone conference win was a 72-63 result at home against Alabama A&M on Jan. 12. Dante Scott averages 12.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, while Jordan Evans posts 11.8 points per match and shoots .360 from long range.
UAPB features the league's leading scorer in Martaveous McKnight who puts in 21.3 points per game. He recorded 29 points against Alcorn in the first meeting this year on 9-of-20 shooting and 6-for-12 from three. The Golden Lions are coming off an unbeaten road weekend where they took down Alabama State 75-69 and Alabama A&M 69-60.
Alcorn is 7-2 against the Delta Devils and 6-1 vs. the Golden Lions under head coach
Montez Robinson. In four seasons, Robinson hoists a 37-28 SWAC record and was the 2016-17 SWAC Coach of the Year.
