LORMAN, Miss. – A three-game homestand for the Alcorn State University softball program will include a 2 p.m. Thursday contest against Nicholls, followed by a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Saturday versus Texas A&M-Texarkana at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
Â
The Lady Braves (2-7) played in the Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament this past weekend, hosted by Mississippi State. The highlight of the tournament came against Georgia Tech when senior
Victoria Tyler recorded her 100th career hit on a home run. It was part of back-to-back homers for the Lady Braves as sophomore
Amari Ramsey followed with a bomb to right field.
Â
Tyler became the 14th student-athlete in school history to reach 100 hits. She also ranks seventh all-time in school history with 69 RBI's, and is approaching the top-10 list in doubles with 17.
Â
Tyler leads the Lady Braves with a .548 on-base percentage and seven RBI's. She's one of four Lady Braves hitting above .300 with a .364 average. Junior
Brittney Triplett carries a .346 average and sophomore
Malea Dickerson is at .318.
Â
Tyler ranks third in the nation in hit by pitch per game. She's been plunked seven times.
Â
Sophomore
Bri Smith is at the top of the Alcorn stat sheet with a .400 batting average. She's knocked six hits in 15 at-bats including a pair of doubles. She also hoists a .500 on-base percentage.
Â
Sophomore
Desirea Lindsey recent completed a nine-game hitting-streak. She knocked a hit in each of the first five games this year after carrying over a four-game streak from last season.
Â
After Alcorn's previous series against Kentucky State, the Lady Braves went on to sweep the SWAC weekly awards. Senior
Paige Taylor was named the Pitcher of the Week, and Triplett was the Hitter of the Week.
Â
"We are looking forward to hosting Nicholls and Texas A&M-Texarkana. We have to find a way to be competitive in all phases of our game. Pitching, defense, offense, energy and effort. It's just a matter of getting consistent in those areas," said Alcorn head coach
Josef Rankin. "Both teams will be challenges for us, but we need to elevate what we are doing and create some opportunities for ourselves."
Â
A tough Nicholls (8-8) squad has wins this season over Southern Illinois, San Jose State, Southern Miss, Nevada, Houston, Louisiana-Monroe and Hofstra. Pitcher Megan Landry has been a workhorse in the circle, sporting a 7-3 record and 1.85 ERA in 60.2 innings. At the plate, Emma Holland is hitting for a .354 average with eight RBI's.
Â
TAMUT (4-4) is an NAIA member in the Red River Athletic Conference. It dropped a doubleheader Tuesday to Central Baptist College. Hannah Cooper hoists a .500 batting average with three homers and four doubles. Lauren Bierschenk is also a threat with a .455 average.
