LORMAN, Miss. – At the midway point of conference play, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will look to make its move up the standings as it hosts Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Grambling State at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Saturday's game will be a Purple Out.
The Braves (7-14, 3-6 SWAC) are 7-2 at home this year where they've outscored the opposition 703-545. They've won three in a row at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
In Alcorn's most recent victory, the Braves topped Southern 76-64. Junior
Maurice Howard had the hot hand with a career-high 27 points. He was 7-for-11 from long-range.
In the home weekend prior to Southern, the Braves beat Mississippi Valley State 63-57 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 74-69. Alcorn improved to 7-2 against the Delta Devils and 6-1 vs. the Golden Lions under head coach
Montez Robinson.
In four seasons, Robinson hoists a 36-27 SWAC record and was the 2016-17 SWAC Coach of the Year.
The Braves lead the SWAC in free throw percentage (.679) and steals (8.3 spg). They rank second in three-pointers made per game (7.4) and assists (13.0 apg).
Individually, Howard is the top three-point shooter in the conference with a .412 percentage and 3.3 made per game. Howard averages 35.3 minutes per game, second-most in the league, and has logged 40 minutes in three straight games.
Howard averages a team-high 13.7 points per game. In addition to his three-point shooting, he's 30-for-32 (.938) from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Troymain Crosby is averaging 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per outing. He won SWAC Player of the Week on Jan. 22 after averaging 17.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in wins over MVSU and UAPB.
Junior Deshaw Andrews averages in double-figures with 10.0 points and a team-high 5.2 rebounds per game. Andrews also ranks second in the SWAC in steals with 1.8 per game.
The Braves are 6-0 (2-0 SWAC) this year when they outscore the opposition in points in the paint.
JSU (9-13, 6-3 SWAC) enter Saturday on a three-game winning streak. It won at GSU 65-63 before returning home to defeat MVSU 61-57 and UAPB 65-52. JSU leads the lead in scoring defense, holding teams to just 66.3 points per game. Chris Howell leads the team with 11.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
GSU (11-11, 5-4 SWAC) is also coming off back-to-back wins over UAPB 79-55 and MVSU 79-57. The Tigers rank first in the conference in both field goal percentage (.444) and field goal percentage defense (.393). Dallas Polk-Hilliard scores a team-high 12.6 points per game and shoots .410 from three-point range.
