BATON ROUGE, La. – Eying the number eight seed, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program travels to Southern for a 3 p.m. tip at F.G. Clark Activity Center.
With the top eight teams qualifying for the SWAC Championships, the Lady Braves (4-23, 3-12 SWAC) are currently in a tie for eighth with Mississippi Valley State (4-22, 3-12 SWAC). Alcorn holds the tiebreaker over the Delta Devilettes after sweeping the season series.
The Lady Braves are also fending off Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-17, 2-13 SWAC) which is just a game behind. UAPB and MVSU still play each other in the final weekend of the season.
Southern (15-11, 12-3 SWAC) sits in first-place in the conference standings.
Alcorn leads the SWAC in offensive rebounds with 16.4 per game. Individually, junior
Toddriana Isler is second in the league in offensive rebounds (2.7 orpg) and top-five in total rebounds (6.8 rpg).
In conference games this year, the Lady Braves have outscored the opposition 277-268 in the fourth quarter.
Senior
De'Asia Brown is the team's leading scorer with 12.4 points per game and 14.7 in conference. She's reached double-figures in 14 of 15 league matches. Brown netted a team-high 14 points on her Senior Day this past Saturday against Alabama State.
Junior
Jada Hargrove also averages in double-figures with 10.2 points per game. She's the only Lady Brave to start in all 27 games. Hargrove ranks second in the SWAC in minutes (33.0 mpg) and third in assists (4.0 apg).
Isler is the team's top rebounder with 6.8 per game and also scores 9.1 points per outing. Isler missed five conference games due to injury, but has scored in double-digits in three of the last four games.
Four different Alcorn student-athletes have registered double-doubles this year including sophomore
Jamaysha Bernard, freshman Hall, Isler and junior
Charisma Walker.
The Jaguars lead Prairie View A&M by a game and a half atop the standings. Southern has won four in a row including home games against Alabama A&M and Alabama State, and road contests at MVSU and UAPB.
Remarkably, Southern is in first without a student-athlete averaging in double-figures. Skylar O'Bear leads the way with 9.0 points per game, while Alyric Scott averages 8.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing. The Jaguars lockdown defensively, allowing just 62.5 points per game.
Alcorn will look to avenge a 75-54 defeat to Southern earlier this year. The Lady Braves found themselves in heavy trouble early, as five student-athletes had at least two fouls by the 3:15 mark of the second quarter. Brown led the team with 12 points.
