Meadows Logs Multi-Hit Game In Loss At Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – The Alcorn State University baseball program saw Nicholls come away victorious with a 10-1 win at Ray E. Didier Field on Tuesday evening.

Freshman reliever Roderick Hammond made his collegiate debut, giving up a run on three hits and recording his first career strikeout over two full innings.

Sophomore Andrew Meadows delivered his first multiple hit performance of his career, lacing two singles and scoring the Braves' lone run of the ballgame.

Nicholls jumped on the board right away, as Austin France slapped a single to center as Nicholls went up 1-0 in the first. The scarlet and gray put the game out of reach in a hurry, dropping a five-spot in the bottom half of the second inning to build a comfortable six-run margin.

Starting pitcher Bukhari Brown calmed his nerves, causing a trio of Colonels to roll over on weak grounders to hurl a 1-2-3 third frame. The home side were on the receiving end of two more runs by way of an RBI double and sacrifice fly in the fourth to see the advantage swell to 8-0.

The Colonels tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, but it could have been more but a perfectly executed relay from Brandon Rembert to Tristin Garcia to Jamey Fabre nailed the runner at third to end the fifth, 9-0 Nicholls. The top of the sixth saw Alcorn's bats wake up, with Meadows starting the inning off with a single up the middle. Jaden Smith followed with a single to right, advancing Meadows to third. Meadows would subsequently score on a passed ball to push across the Braves' run.

The home nine would plate one run in the seventh and put the game on ice as Alcorn fell to 4-11 on the season with the 10-1 loss.

Starting pitcher Bukhari Brown (2-1) received the loss, giving up 6 runs and seven hits in three innings while striking out one Colonel. Junior reliever Abdallah Salman worked three subsequent innings, allowing three runs and four hits, while five of his nine outs via strikeout. Freshman Roderick Hammond closed out the contest, tossing two innings and striking out one in his Alcorn collegiate debut.

Alcorn baseball will have a quick turnaround, as it will try to avenge tonight's loss tomorrow evening when the Colonels come to Lorman for a 6 p.m. start.
