PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Alcorn State University baseball program fell behind big in the first inning and could not recoup as Prairie View took control early in a 12-6 series salvaging win for the Panthers.
Junior Brandon Rembert had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored while junior Jordan McGowan picked up his first muti-hit game of the season to pace the Braves offense on the day.
Junior pitcher Abdallah Salman came in for a long-relief appearance to help stop the bleeding as he hurled five strong innings of one-run ball and senior reliever Zachary Perez came in for the last two frames to shut down the Panthers, facing seven batters while allowing only a single walk.
Freshman Tristin Garcia had a single and a stolen base to get into scoring position to begin the game but were unable to capitalize. The first inning was a nightmare situation for the Braves as it saw six Panthers cross the plate and put the visitors behind the eight-ball immediately.
It was a quiet second inning for both squads, but Alcorn was able to put a mark in the run column in the third as junior Micah Walker came in to score on a double play ground ball to cut the deficit to five, 6-1 Panthers. The fourth inning gave the Braves more momentum with a sacrifice fly by Rembert and an RBI single for McGowan to push the game to within arm's reach at 6-3.
Prairie View A&M was able to get one back in the bottom of the fourth, on an RBI single by Dalton Horner to open the margin back to four, 7-3. The visiting side once again closed in on the Panthers with another run in the sixth as Alcorn got the lead back down to three at 7-4.
The bottom of the sixth saw PVAMU's bats spring back to life, finding all the holes in the defense with five runs on five singles to close the door on a potential comeback, 12-4. The Braves a run each in the eighth and ninth but ultimately fell to 6-12 on the campaign as it dropped the contest by a 12-6 final score.
Alcorn baseball gets two days off before traveling south to Hammond, Louisiana for a Wednesday night matchup with the Southeastern Louisiana Lions at 6 p.m.
