Lady Braves Rematch SLU at Home Tuesday

LORMAN, Miss. – For the third time this season, the Alcorn State University softball program will square off with Southeastern Louisiana in a 1 p.m. contest Tuesday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
 
Alcorn (2-13, 0-3 SWAC) and SLU (14-11, 4-2 SLC) met twice at the Mississippi State Tournament on Feb. 24-25. The Lady Lions took both meetings 8-0 and 7-1. Alcorn's run came on an RBI single by junior Keelee Huff.
 
"Southeastern is going to be another tough opponent for us. But honestly, we have to work on us. Never any disrespect to our opponents, but they don't matter if we don't take care of Alcorn State University softball," said Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin.
 
The Lady Braves opened conference play this past weekend against Prairie View A&M. Junior Simone McKinney batted for a .545 average with six hits in 11 at-bats. It included a 4-for-5 performance in game three.
 
Junior Alexsis Ramirez was inserted into the starting lineup and posted a .500 average on the weekend including a game-tying RBI single in the seventh inning of game three to send it to extra innings.
 
Alcorn has outscored the opposition 11-9 in the first inning and 10-2 in the seventh.

The Lady Braves have stuck to a two-pitcher rotation. Senior Paige Taylor has thrown seven complete games in eight starts with a 3.91 ERA and a pair of wins. Junior Ambria Dorsey has struck out 27 batters in 44.1 innings with four complete games.
 
Senior Victoria Tyler ranks 12th all-time in Alcorn history with 108 hits. She also ranks seventh all-time in school history with 70 RBI's, and is approaching the top-10 list in doubles with 17.
 
On the season, Triplett, McKinney and Tyler all hit for a .333 batting average. Tyler carries team-highs in on-base percentage (.490) and slugging (.410). Triplett has a team-high five multi-hit games on the season.
 
"We need to focus on playing better and actually enjoying the game. Some of our focus has been too much of what the result will be instead of just playing the game and see what happens. YOLO! It's at a point in the season where we need to get on track and play with more confidence and know who we are and go put our best effort forward," Rankin said.
 
Rankin has been known to mix and match his lineups throughout the season as 37 different batting orders were used in 2018. So far in 2019, the Lady Braves have used a different order in 13 of 15 games.
 
SLU took two out of three from both Stephen F. Austin and Houston Baptist to begin Southland Conference play. The Lady Lions are 6-0 against the SWAC this year which includes wins over PVAMU, Mississippi Valley State and Alabama State.
 
Ella Manzer leads the team at the plate with a .397 average, six doubles and 14 RBIs. Rebecca Skains is also a threat with a .348 average, 12 doubles, two triples, a homer and 21 RBIs. Alley McDonald is the ace of the pitching staff with a 1.76 ERA in 59.2 innings.
 
The Lady Braves will resume conference action this weekend when they travel for a three-game series at Grambling State. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.
