Southeastern Louisiana Tops Lady Braves in Non-Conference Game

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball program dropped an 8-1 decision to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.

"Today was just about learning not to give a good team extra outs and opportunities. I believe it was the first inning that we probably could have caught a foul ball if we would have strained a little more to lay out to make that play. A pitch or two later, RBI single. That's a hard lesson for us right now, but we will just keep working to get better," said Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin.

Alcorn's (2-14) run came in the second inning. Junior Alexsis Ramirez got it started with a single to right, and advanced to second on a ground out. With two outs, junior Eva Scott laced an RBI double into the left center gap which made it a 3-1 game at the time.

Ramirez finished the game with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. She also pitched 2.0 innings of relief and gave up just one earned run.

Freshman Brooke Roach made her first career appearance and doubled to right center in the sixth inning. Junior Brittney Triplett reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

Alcorn used its 14th different batting order in 16 games.

"I wanted to give more people an opportunity today. It was good to see Alexsis continue to swing it well and Brooke get her first at-bats of the year. It's good to have her healthy," Rankin said.

The Lady Lions (15-11) scored two in the first, one in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. They tallied 12 hits in the game including three from Amberlyn Alfano. Ali McCoy hit an inside-the-park home run on a knock to the right field corner.

Senior Paige Taylor started for the Lady Braves and allowed three earned runs in 3.0 frames. Junior Ambria Dorsey tossed a scoreless 2.0 innings to close it out.

The Lady Lions used four pitchers. McCoy started and surrendered one run in 3.0 innings. Briahna Bennett picked up the win, and Caity Van Hemelryck and Shelby Sitzman also made scoreless appearances.

"We are on to our preparation for this weekend. We just need to work hard to get back on track in Ruston," Rankin said.

The Lady Braves will resume conference action this weekend when they travel for a three-game series at Grambling State. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.
