Lady Braves Begin Five-Game Homestand Tuesday against Rust College

LORMAN, Miss. – To begin its longest homestand of the year, the Alcorn State University softball program welcomes Rust College to the Alcorn Softball Complex for a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 1 p.m.
 
The Lady Braves (5-14, 3-3 SWAC) are coming off a three-game sweep over Grambling State over the weekend. Alcorn busted out the bats and scored at least 10 runs in all three games.
 
"We want to continue to compete tomorrow. Again, the focus will continue to be on ourselves and work to get better. We can't settle and be satisfied with what we did this past weekend. We have to continue to grow and elevate," said Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin.
 
Junior Eva Scott was 7-for-11 (.636) on the weekend, while sophomore Amari Ramsey was 7-for-12 (.583) with a homer and four doubles. Junior Ambria Dorsey went 2-0 with a save and registered a 0.43 ERA in 16.1 innings. Alcorn improved to 30-16 all-time against GSU and 6-1 under head coach Josef Rankin.
 
The Lady Braves have three hitters batting over .300 this season. Junior Simone McKinney hoists a team-high .367 average, while senior Victoria Tyler hits for a .327 average and team-high .492 on-base percentage. Triplett is hitting for a .305 average and is 8-for-8 in stolen bases. McKinney has submitted a team-high six multi-hit games including a pair of four-hit outings.
 
McKinney and Triplett are both on seven-game on-base streaks, while Scott is on a five-game hitting streak.
 
Freshman Brooke Roach missed the first 15 games due to injury, but has made an immediate impact since her return. In four games, she's homered twice and doubled twice, and is hitting for a .385 average and 1.000 slugging.


Tyler ranks 12th all-time in Alcorn history with 111 hits. She also ranks seventh all-time in school history with 73 RBI's, and is approaching the top-10 list in doubles with 17. Ramsey is tied for ninth all-time in career homers at Alcorn with eight. She cranked out six last year and two so far this season.
 
Alcorn has flipped back-and-forth between two pitchers all year. Dorsey has thrown 62.2 innings, while senior Paige Taylor has tossed 61.1 innings. They combine for all of Alcorn's wins and 13 complete games.
 
Alcorn has outscored the opposition 15-2 in the seventh inning this year. The Lady Braves have used 17 different batting orders in 19 games.
 
Rust College is looking for its first win of the season. It most recently dropped a home series to Stillman College where it was outscored 57-5 over three games. The Bearcats compete at the NAIA level.
 
Alcorn is 5-0 all-time against Rust College. The teams will meet for the second year in a row after the Lady Braves won a pair of 13-0 games last season.
