Hot-Hitting Lady Braves Host MVSU Friday, Saturday

Alcorn Game Notes | Live Stats

LORMAN, Miss. – Riding a five-game winning-streak, the Alcorn State University softball program will look to keep rolling when it takes on Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Alcorn Softball Complex.

The Lady Braves (7-14, 3-3 SWAC) has scored at least 10 runs in each of the five victories. Most recently, they swept a doubleheader over Rust College on Tuesday where they scored 17 runs in each game. Freshman Sandrea Hord was 6-for-6 in the two games with two triples, a double, five runs scored and nine RBIs.

"We need to continue to build and progress. We need to come in today at practice with a lot of confidence and go to work in preparation for tomorrow," said Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin.

Sophomore Amari Ramsey is the reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week winner. Against Grambling State, she went 7-for-12 with six runs scored. Of her seven hits, four were doubles and one was a homer. She tallied a 1.167 slugging percentage and also walked and drove in five RBIs.

The Lady Braves posted a three-game sweep over Grambling State. Junior Eva Scott was 7-for-11 (.636) on the weekend, to go along with Ramsey's big performance. Junior Ambria Dorsey went 2-0 with a save and registered a 0.43 ERA in 16.1 innings. Alcorn improved to 30-16 all-time against GSU and 6-1 under head coach Josef Rankin.

Alcorn has outscored the opposition 23-13 in the first inning and 15-2 in the seventh inning this year.

Junior Simone McKinney hoists a team-high .367 batting average, while senior Victoria Tyler hits for a .327 average and team-high .492 on-base percentage. Triplett is hitting for a .311 average and is 8-for-8 in stolen bases. McKinney has submitted a team-high six multi-hit games including a pair of four-hit outings.

McKinney is on a nine-game on-base streak, while Scott is on a five-game hitting streak.

Hord has come on strong as of late. She's increased her batting average to .357, second-highest on the team. Hord leads the squad with a .524 slugging percentage and 13 RBIs.

Freshman Brooke Roach missed the first 15 games due to injury, but has made an immediate impact since her return. In five games, she's homered twice and doubled twice, and is hitting for a .385 average and 1.000 slugging.

Alcorn has flipped back-and-forth between two pitchers all year. Dorsey has thrown 66.2 innings, while senior Paige Taylor has tossed 66.1 innings. They combine for all of Alcorn's wins and 14 complete games.

Tyler ranks 12th all-time in Alcorn history with 111 hits. She also ranks seventh all-time in school history with 73 RBI's, and is approaching the top-10 list in doubles with 17. Ramsey is tied for ninth all-time in career homers at Alcorn with eight. She cranked out six last year and two so far this season.

"Mississippi Valley always presents a challenge. They are going to compete. They will come in with a lot of energy, but we need to be the aggressor and get after it. They don't care that we swept last week. They don't care about a winning-streak. They will look to come in and win this series," Rankin said.

MVSU (4-23, 0-6 SWAC) is coached by Lee Smith who has won eight SWAC Tournament titles since 2004. The youthful Delta Devilettes were swept Texas Southern and Southern to begin conference play this year.

MVSU is paced by Deshonte Smith who carries team-highs of .321 batting average, .526 slugging, seven doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs. Alyssa Montes is the ace of the staff with a 3.86 ERA in 70.2 innings including eight complete games.

"Our mentality has to be 'bring on the noise.' Let's compete with relentless effort and execution and see what happens," Rankin said.
