Lady Braves Facing Must-Win Situation at TSU, PVAMU

HOUSTON – Controlling its own destiny, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program can clinch a berth to the SWAC Championships with wins over Texas Southern at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at H&PE Arena, and Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m. Saturday at the William Nicks Building.
 
A 2-0 weekend would lock-up the No. 8 seed for the Lady Braves (4-24, 3-13 SWAC). Alcorn can also make it in with a 1-1 weekend if Mississippi Valley State (5-23, 4-13 SWAC) losses to Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-19, 2-15 SWAC) on Saturday.
 
Alcorn is going for the season sweep over Texas Southern (14-13, 10-6 SWAC). The Lady Braves won the first meeting this year 53-52 at home in the conference opener. Senior De'Asia Brown netted a team-high 15 points including seven in the fourth quarter. Alcorn led for nearly the entire game.
 
The Lady Braves defeated Texas Southern in the season finale last year 54-52 and are seeking their third straight victory over the Tigers.
 
Alcorn will look to go on the road and knock off Prairie View A&M (14-12, 11-5 SWAC) for the second straight season. Though, the Panthers won the first meeting this year 82-61 in Lorman.
 
In conference games, the Lady Braves have outscored the opposition 286-281 in the fourth quarter.
 
Alcorn leads the SWAC in offensive rebounds with 16.4 per game. Individually, junior Toddriana Isler ranks second in the league in offensive rebounds (2.6 orpg) and freshman Diamond Hall is fourth (2.3 orpg).
 
Brown is the team's leading scorer with 12.2 points per game and 14.1 in conference. She's reached double-figures in 14 of 16 league matches. Brown turned in a team-high 14 points on her Senior Day against Alabama State. She scored a career-high 27 points at MVSU, and tallied 19 points in the first meeting against PVAMU.
 
Junior Jada Hargrove also averages in double-figures with 10.1 points per game. She's the only Lady Brave to start in all 28 games. Hargrove ranks second in the SWAC in minutes (33.1 mpg), fourth in assists (3.9 apg) and fifth in steals (2.1 spg).
 
Isler is the team's top rebounder with 6.7 per game and also scores 8.7 points per outing.
 
TSU is in a four-way tie for third-place and is fighting for a top-four positioning and the right to host a first round game. The Tigers are getting hot at the right time and have won four straight games. Niya Mitchell averages a double-double with 14.1 points and a league-leading 10.6 rebounds per game.
 
PVAMU can still win the regular season title if it wins its last two games, which would include a victory over current first-place Southern. The Panthers are two games behind the Jaguars. Shala Dobbins averages 15.3 points per outing to lead the squad.
 
The 2019 SWAC Championships begin Tuesday with the higher seed hosting the first round. Possible destinations for Alcorn include Southern and PVAMU.
