MONROE, La. –  The Alcorn State University baseball program took an early lead but could not hold on as the Warhawks scored nine runs over their final three at-bats to snap the Braves two-game winning streak in an 11-4 loss.
Senior Kirt Cormier upped his on-base streak to 12 games with a two-RBI double in the top of the third. It was Cormier's sixth multi-RBI ballgame of the season.
Senior Brandon Barna was the Braves lone multi-hit performer, hitting a double and a single while coming around to score once.
Sophomore Jamey Fabre and freshman Andrew Meadows drove in an RBI apiece with Fabre extending his modest hit streak to six games.
Junior Brandon Rembert showed an extraordinary amount of patience, drawing four walks in the contest and scoring a run.
Senior Devon Key pitched a spotless seventh, holding the Warhawks to zero hits and zero runs while whiffing one batter.
Junior Abdallah Salman took the hill for his second start of the campaign, allowing a leadoff walk before inducing three straight weak groundouts to escape unscathed.
In the second inning, Barna got the Braves into the hit column with a gap shot to right before scoring on a deep looping single that hugged the right field line by sophomore Jamey Fabre to put Alcorn on the board. Freshman Andrew Meadows provided an RBI groundout to short as well to give the purple and gold a 2-0 advantage.
The bottom of the second saw the Warhawks pull even with two runs but Alcorn came right back in the top of the third to recapture the lead. Rembert led off the frame with a four-pitch walk and was followed by a single by freshman Tristin Garcia. A wild pitch advanced the runners before Cormier cranked a frozen rope double to the wall in left to drive in two, 4-2 Braves.
Salman was relieved by senior Zachary Perez after the third inning, leaving with a 4-2 lead after allowing just three hits. Perez came in and locked down ULM over the next two innings as he held the maroon and gold hitless.
Louisiana-Monroe got three hits, four runs and benefitted from two Braves errors in the bottom of the sixth to stake its claim to its first lead of the evening, 6-4 Warhawks.
ULM added five insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the deal as Alcorn saw its two-game winning streak snapped in an 11-4 defeat.
Freshman Roderick Hammond (0-2) received the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) and two hits in his lone inning of relief.
Alcorn baseball hosts bitter rival Jackson State in the final SWAC weekend series of the regular season on Friday at 6 p.m. from Willie E. "Rat" McGowan Stadium.Â
