MOBILE, Ala. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program dropped all three sets to the South Alabama Jaguars on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Braves (2-3) were headed by juniors Daharri Thompkins with six kills, Jasmine Chambers with eight assists and Fiapaipai Iosia with ten digs. Sophomore Simone Barren was tops on the squad with four blocks and Iosia now has double-digit digs in all five of the team's matches this season.
South Alabama | L, 0-3 (8-25, 10-25, 17-25)
The Jaguars struck early and often to ignite the home crowd in the first set, busting out of the gates with a 15-6 start due in large part to ten kills by five different players, forcing a Lady Braves timeout. The break in action did little to slow USA's momentum, as the Jags finished off the match by scoring 10 of the last 12 points to cruise in the first set (8-25).
The second set was more of the same for the purple and gold, with the Jags building an early cushion of 13-7 before forcing a Lady Braves timeout. South Alabama proceeded to outscore Alcorn 12-3 to take a two-set lead (10-25).
The third set opened with a double block for senior Wanya Morris and sophomore Simone Barren to give the Lady Braves its first lead of the night. An 8-2 rally by USA swung the pendulum back to the Jags as Coach Robinson called timeout to try and stop the bleeding. The next 20 points were fairly even with South Alabama only outpacing the Lady Braves 11-9 and holding onto a 19-12 upper-hand. The Jags concluded the proceedings with a 6-5 finish to topple the Lady Braves in three (17-25).
Alcorn will kickoff the Blazer Invitational with a Friday matinee at 12 p.m. against the host University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers inside Bartow Arena.
