Grybos, Souflard Score As Lady Braves Fall To Nicholls

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's soccer program found the back of the net twice in the eighth and 15th minutes of the match but could not claim the victory as the Colonels gutted out a 3-2 win Friday evening.

The Lady Braves earned its first goal of the 2019 campaign in the eighth minute as a beautiful cross by junior Mireya Gonzalez set up a perfectly placed strike into the bottom right corner of the goal by senior Christina Grybos. It was Grybos' first career goal as a Lady Brave and Gonzalez's second career assist.

The purple and gold would then take its first lead just seven minutes later as a free kick by senior Lauryn Souflard floated past the outstretched arms of the Nicholls goalie to give Alcorn a 2-1 advantage. The goal was Souflard's first career goal with Alcorn as she transferred in this season after spending 2018 at Oakland University.

The visitors from Thibodaux would even the score at two in the 21st minute before draining the go-ahead goal in the 24th minute to come away with a hard-fought win. Both sides went scoreless for the final 66 minutes of regulation.

Alcorn had season-highs in goals (2), shots (7) and shots on goal (5) as Gonzalez, senior Gemma Dunn and sophomore Paula Solé Cabeza all tallied a shot on goal.
Freshman Kali Helms had eight saves on the night and was pivotal in keeping the Lady Braves within striking distance throughout the second half.

Alcorn will finish up its non-conference slate with a home match versus the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay on Sunday afternoon with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. inside Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
