MONROE, La. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program played Louisiana-Monroe tough but the Warhawks defeated the Lady Braves in three.
The Lady Braves (2-7) were led on offense by freshman Jéda Curry with five kills and defensively by junior Fiapaipai Iosia with a season-best 17 digs.
Preseason All-SWAC Second-Teamer Barbara Grubisic Cabo was the top setter in her first action of the year with seven assists while junior Jasmine Chambers also contributed seven to tie for the team-high.
Curry was fantastic on defense and behind the service line as well, tallying season-highs in both digs (11) and service aces (4).

The first set started off fairly well for Alcorn as it took a 3-2 advantage on two Warhawk errors. A 6-1 run by ULM took the momentum away from the Lady Braves and scored 15 of the last 17 points of the set to cruise to a victory (9-25).
Louisiana-Monroe kept the hot start rolling into the second set, opening the frame with a 17-5 onslaught. The Lady Braves kept the Warhawks in check for the rest of the set but ULM ultimately came away with the win (12-25).
Alcorn battled back to begin the third set, taking a 10-6 upper-hand through the first 16 points. Louisiana-Monroe caught up to the Lady Braves after a 5-1 stretch evened the score at 11. After the purple and gold took a 17-15 lead, the Warhawks ripped off five consecutive points to go ahead 20-17. Alcorn clawed its way to a 25-24 advantage and had a match point opportunity twice but UL-Monroe earned the sweep (27-29).
The purple and gold will start its conference slate on Friday, September 27 as it takes on Southern in the annual SWAC Round-Up. The first round-up of the season will be in Prairie View, Texas with the first match being held at 10 a.m. inside the William Nicks Building.
