LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program will play the host Nicholls Colonels as part of a two-day doubleheader. The first game will be Friday at 7 p.m. and the second game is Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Lady Braves jumped out to its first 2-0 start since 2014, taking care of Talladega College and Mississippi University for Women at the Owl Invitational last weekend.
Alcorn leads the SWAC in service aces (14) and aces per set (1.75) with junior
Jasmine Chambers making up seven of those to also lead the conference.
Chambers not only made noise as a server but she was also the primary setter against the Tornadoes and Owls, averaging 7.13 assists per set for the third best mark in the conference through the first week.
Junior
Daharri Thompkins was extremely efficient, hitting 16 kills with only three errors for a hitting percentage of .464 to place third in the SWAC.
Junior
Fiapaipai Iosia continued her standout play from a season ago, recording 32 digs and averaging 4.0 digs per set. The Preseason All-SWAC First Teamer is second in the conference for digs per set.
Sophomore
Simone Barren was the key offensive cog during the opening weekend as she was tops on the squad with 2.63 kills per set and 21 kills to go along with 6 blocks. Her 0.75 blocks per set places her top-five in the conference.
Freshman
Jéda Curry made the most of her collegiate doubleheader debut, leading the team with 11 kills in the win over MUW and finishing tied with sophomore
Sydney Joseph for the second-most kills on the club with 18.
"Nicholls is a great team and will allow us an opportunity to compete at a high level," said head coach
Melissa Robinson. "Competing at a high level will help us prepare for conference play."
Scouting the Nicholls Colonels (September 6 at 7 p.m. & September 7 at 11 a.m.)
The Colonels enter the match undefeated after defeating Mercer, Campbell and Georgia Southern at the Mercer Bears Classic last weekend. The red and gray have already matched last season's win total of three.
As a team, Nicholls is top-five in the Southland for hitting percentage (.238) and aces per set (1.38) while placing second in kills per set (13.85).
Jackie Alanis is the Colonels top scoring threat, ranking top-five in the conference for kills per set (3.40) and points per set (4.05) plus a top-10 mark for aces per set (0.50).
Meghan Wozniak is the squad's main setter, averaging 9.69 assists per set (2nd in Southland) and Kate Hoerdemann rounds out the Colonels in the top-10 listings with a .333 hitting percentage.
The Colonels lead the all-time series (4-0) and last met in the 2013 Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana where Nicholls won in straight sets.
