UAB Hands Braves Season-Opening Setback

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB used double-digit scoring contributions from five different players to cruise to a 99-50 season-opening victory over the Alcorn men's basketball team Wednesday at the Bartow Center.

Alcorn went toe-to-toe with the Blazers early in the opening half, never trailing by more then five points in the beginning 10 minutes. A layup by Tyreek Scott-Grayson at the 10:48 mark gave UAB a six-point cushion, but the Braves countered with their own 9-6 spurt punctuated by a Troymain Crosby layup to slice the lead to three, 22-19. UAB promptly responded with a 28-8 run to close out the half and swing momentum back to the home club for good.

The Blazers nearly matched its point production in the second stanza, starting right where they left off with a 12-0 streak over the span of four minutes to make it a 67-27 contest. A Kurk Lee layup ended the drought and signaled the first of 11 second-half points for the junior transfer, who came off the bench for a team-high 14-point performance.

Tyree Corbett followed suit, scoring nine of his total 11 in the latter half, the pair accounting for 20 of the Braves' 23 second-half points. Along with his 11 points, Corbett secured a team-high seven rebounds, all coming in the final half.

Jalen Benjamin paced the Blazers with a game-high 21 points, going 3-for-6 from deep and sinking eight free throws, while Quan Jackson teetered on the edge of a double-double with 14 points and nine boards.

Alcorn continues its road tour with a Saturday (Nov. 28) clash against Kent State at 1 p.m.
