Vanderbilt uses solid first half to hold off men’s basketball

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Playing in their third road contest in a week, the Alcorn State University men's basketball team battled with Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt with the Commodores taking the 87-59 victory on Sunday afternoon inside Memorial Gym.

Senior guard Jacoby Ross, playing in his first game of the season, paced the Braves (0-4) with 14 points on 5-14 shooting that included a pair of three-pointers. Junior forward Tyree Corbett added a season-high 12 points on 6-13 shooting and made it a double-double with 12 rebounds and added a pair of steals to go with a block. A trio of starters combined for 24 points led by Oddyst Walker's nine points, Byron Joshua with eight and Anthony Fairley with seven.

Following an opening half in which Alcorn State connected on 9-30 (30) from the field, it was a strong second stanza that saw the Braves hit 15-35 (42.86) from the field to end up going 24-65 (36.9) from the field on the night. Alcorn State hit a trio of three-pointers and went 8-10 (80) at the foul line.

Trailing 2-0 early on, the Braves took their first lead of the game going on a 4-0 run with a pair of free throws by Walker before Fairley came away with a steal that eventually led to a jumper by David Pierce for the 4-2 lead nearly two minutes in.

Vanderbilt (4-2) answered with a 11-0 run to jump out to a 13-4 lead and after a layup by Corbett trimmed the deficit back to seven, the Commodores finished the first 20 minutes outscoring Alcorn State 28-15 to hold a 41-21 lead at halftime.

The Braves recorded 38 points in the second half as Alcorn State fought back to within 18 a couple of times on baskets by Joshua before Vanderbilt was able to use a 46-38 edge on scoring in the second half to claim the 87-59 victory.

Scotty Pippen Jr., son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen led Vanderbilt and all scorers with 30 points. Myles Stute added 16 points as four reached double-figures in scoring for the Commodores as they went 32-56 (57.1) from the field, 14-30 (46.7) from three and 9-18 (50) at the foul line.

Alcorn State held advantages on points off turnovers (21-19), second chance points (11-6), while Vanderbilt used points in the paint (32-18) and fastbreak points (27-3) to take the victory.

Alcorn State closes the non-conference portion of the schedule this coming Wednesday afternoon with a recently added game against No. 2 Baylor with tip off set for 2 p.m. in Waco, Texas.
