Clark, Obillo Score Double-Digits In Loss To Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program was led on the offensive end by junior Kirdis Clark (11) and freshman Cayla Obillo (10) in a 74-57 defeat against the Lady Jaguars.

The Lady Braves' (9-12, 5-4 SWAC) outscored the Lady Jaguars by a margin of 21-17 in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late as they trailed by 21 entering the final period.

Clark was the leading scorer for the purple and gold while hitting 5-of-11 (.455) to go along with a tied for game-high four steals.

Obillo was the other Alcorn player to hit double-figure points, had a team-best five rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Nia McCalphia had a career-best four steals as well as seven points and two assists.

Southern (9-11, 7-2 SWAC) dominated the offensive glass, garnering 14 second chance points compared to Alcorn's two.

The light blue and gold had four players record ten points or more as Raven White (17), Amani McWain (14), Jaden Towner (13) and Brittany Rose (11) all topped that threshold.

Taneara Moore was the game's top rebounder, grabbing 11 boards.

Junior LaRae Rascoe opened the scoring with a pair of free throws but Southern reeled off nine consecutive to take the lead (9-2). Things did not get much better for the visiting Lady Braves, as SU outscored Alcorn 12-5 over the remaining 6:16 to go ahead by 14, 21-7.

The girls from Baton Rouge kept the foot on the gas, claiming a 19-point cushion at the halfway point of the second quarter (31-12). The purple and gold scored eight points to Southern's six points for the rest of the half with the home squad leading 37-20 at the half.

The Lady Jaguars' upper-hand grew to as much as 24 in the third period with the Lady Braves staring at a 21-point hole at the start of the final frame (57-36).

Coach Pruitt's club slowly started to chip into the deficit as it trimmed the gap to 12 at the media timeout, 61-49. The light blue and gold were able to keep the Lady Braves at arm's length the rest of the way as Alcorn fell by a score of 74-57.

The purple and gold will take Monday off before heading up the road to Jackson State on Saturday to face the Lady Tigers at 3 p.m. inside the Lee E. Williams Center.
