NEW ORLEANS, La. –  The Baseball Braves were only able to cobble together three runs on three hits as Southern emerged victorious, 8-3.
Alcorn (1-1) was only able to muster one extra base hit and eight baserunners with five of those runners coming off two hit batters and three free passes.
Senior
Joe Smith coasted against the Jaguars hitters, posting three innings of scoreless ball while striking out three batters and holding SU to only two hits.
Junior
Jamey Fabre tallied an RBI double and senior
Brandon Rembert notched the only other RBI of the afternoon with a seventh inning single.
Southern (2-0) went 3-for-5 on stolen base attempts to go along with 11 hits and six walks.
The light blue and gold got on the board first in the opening frame before tacking on another run in the second.
Alcorn made the Jags pay for their mistake in the bottom half, as an error, passed ball and wild pitch all combined to set up a two-out RBI double to left field by
Jamey Fabre which made it 2-1, SU.
The score remained the same until Southern stepped to the plate in the top of the fourth and proceeded to unload four runs, three on a bases-clearing double, to open the game up a little bit to 6-1 Jaguars.
The pitching would take over throughout the next three innings as two base knocks by Southern was all the two sides could record heading into the seventh inning stretch.
Coach Richardson's boys inched their way into striking range in the bottom of the seventh, pushing across two runs on a Rembert RBI single and a wild pitch that brought in redshirt senior
Micah Walker to whittle the margin down to 6-3, Southern.
The SU pitching staff would put the clamps down on the Alcorn bats from that point forward while the Jaguars logged two more runs in the ninth to come away with an 8-3 neutral site victory.
The purple and gold finish out the Andre Dawson Tournament against the UAPB Golden Lions at 11 a.m. Sunday morning inside Wesley Barrow Stadium.

Overall Statement:
"The difference in the game today was that we didn't do the little things today. We also didn't swing the bats the way we're capable of. You have to take your hat off to Southern, today they were the better team. We look forward to the opportunity to play them again."
