LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball program gets a reprieve from the grueling two-game SEC road trip as it begins SWAC competition this weekend at Jackson State.
Friday & Sunday's games will take place on JSU's campus while Saturday's contest will be the inaugural Johnny T's Mayor's Trophy Game at Smith-Wills Stadium.
Alcorn (2-3) hung tough with the #4 Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road on Wednesday, staying within striking distance the entire game during an 8-4 loss.
The Braves offense has been firing on all cylinders to begin the campaign, ranking in the nation's top-30 for average runs per game (7.8) and averaging a homer per game, both tops in the SWAC.
Senior
Travaris Cole ranks fifth in the country for RBI per game (2.20), eighth for homers per game (0.60), top-25 for home runs (3) and top-35 for hits per game (1.80).

Brandon Rembert has picked up where he left off last season with a .368 batting average and an on-base percentage of .480 (eighth in SWAC) while placing second and third in the conference with 1.00 walks per game and 1.20 runs per game, respectively. Rembert has reached base safely in 14 consecutive games, dating back into the 2019 campaign.
Redshirt sophomore
George Osborne III has picked up two saves in as many relief appearances, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and a .167 batting average against coming out of the bullpen.
Sophomore
Tristin Garcia does not qualify for any leaderboards yet but has gotten off to a strong start through three games played. Garcia is slashing .438 / .471 / .625 with seven hits, five RBI, four runs scored and a homer while currently on a ten-game on-base streak which goes back to last season.
Sophomore
Tyler Daniels has manned the leadoff spot in each game and has proved to be one of the most patient hitters in the NCAA, ranking 6th nationally with 1.60 walks per game.
Redshirt senior
Jose Fernandez has produced in the early going, making two appearances and one start while recording 12 strikeouts (fourth in SWAC) and an ERA of 4.00 through 9.0 innings of work.
Scouting the Jackson State Tigers
Jackson State (3-4) has one win over a division one opponent this season (5-4 over Southern Illinois) and are coming off a doubleheader sweep of LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday by a combined score of 29-6).
The blue and white have been a top-tier offense in the NCAA through the first two weeks of the season, hitting for a .335 average (eighth in the nation) while leading the conference with a .405 slugging percentage and an average of 1.60 stolen bases per contest.
JSU was well-represented on the Preseason All-SWAC Teams, landing four position players on the First Team and two pitchers on the Second Team including Preseason Pitcher of the Year Nikelle Galatas.
One of those first-teamers is Jaylyn Williams, who has been tearing the cover off the baseball to the tune of a .579 average (eighth in NCAA) with 11 hits and a SWAC-best .571 on-base percentage.
The Baseball Braves are 101-158-1 all-time versus Jackson State and the Tigers won the season series in 2019 by a count of 4-2.
