Devon Key Dazzles In Loss To UNO

NEW ORLEANS, La. –  As pockets of rain came and went throughout the evening, senior Devon Key remained dominant, shutting down the Privateers out of the bullpen despite a 11-0 defeat.

The Braves (2-7, 0-3 SWAC) did not have many scoring chances all evening, putting just five runners on base while stranding four.

Key was the stopper the purple and gold desperately needed, coming on in the second inning with the Braves already facing a six-run hole and pitching a career-high 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.

Redshirt senior Micah Walker, senior Brandon Rembert and redshirt senior Hunter Wilson logged the club's three hits to go along with walks by juniors Jamey Fabre and Kasey Fillingame.

Redshirt senior Jordan McGowan stole his second bag of the season.

New Orleans (8-5) became the first team to shutout Alcorn since Mississippi Valley State blanked the Braves in a 5-0 loss on April 21, 2018.

Tresten Kennard went 2-for-3 with a towering home run, 3 RBI, a run scored and two free passes.

Both of Darren Willis' hits turned into doubles, knocking in three Privateers and scoring once.

Salo Iza tallied the blue and silver's other double on the night, raking in three hits, two RBI and a run scored as well.

Eight UNO pitchers combined to keep the Braves off the scoreboard, surrendering just three hits and two walks while whiffing ten hitters.

Alcorn went down in order and UNO scored two in the first to set the tone for the rest of the ballgame.

Wilson made sure the boys from Lorman got into the hit column with a hotshot single back up the box in the second but did not score. The Privateers broke the game open in the second by racking up four runs on three hits while batting around to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The third started off promising for the Baseball Braves when McGowan stole second and Walker laced a single into center to move runners to the corners with one down. New Orleans survived unscathed as they got a strikeout and picked off the runner on third to maintain the six-run lead.

Both pitching staffs hunkered down, allowing just four hits between the units into the seventh inning stretch.

The Privateers tacked on three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to leave no doubt, claiming a 11-0 win over the boys in purple and gold.

The Baseball Braves will host its first home games of the 2020 season when it welcomes Alabama A&M to The Reservation for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. inside Willie E. "Rat" McGowan Stadium.
