LORMAN, Miss. – Graduate
Jada Hargrove from the Alcorn State University women's basketball program is in contention for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Â
She's one of four candidates from the Southwestern Athletic Conference along with Jolene Ceniceros (Jackson State), Arion Span (Alabama State) and Richelle Velez (Texas Southern).
Â
Hargrove excelled both athletically and academically at Alcorn. On the court, the Riverdale, Georgia native recorded a team-high 70 steals, which helped the Lady Braves rank No. 1 in the nation in steals per game. She was a four-year letterwinner and notched 29 double-figure scoring games over the last two seasons.
Â
In the classroom, Hargrove posted a 4.0 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters in 2019-20. The biology major earned a spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Â
Hargrove was Alcorn's lone representative at the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in May 2020, which comprised of 400 student-athletes from schools across the country. She had the opportunity to network with athletics administrators, sports industry experts and other student-athletes over the three-day forum.
Â
Of the four candidates from the SWAC, the conference office will select up to two nominations and submit them to the Woman of the Year selection committee. The committee will then choose the top-30 honorees from across the country, 10 from each Division I, II and III.
Â
From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
