Lady Braves Play Two at Tulane to Open Spring Season

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Alcorn State University women's tennis team opened the spring season Thursday playing twice against Tulane. The first match the teams just played to four points with the Green Wave taking the 4-0 win. In the second match, Tulane took the match by a score of 7-0.

During the first match in doubles, Stefany Grlj and Kimberly Kaome won two games at No. 2 before falling short, 2-6. Aizat Zholdakyeva and Mikaela Konstantinov competed at the top flight grabbing a game before falling, 1-6.

In singles, Tulane picked up wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 to close the match. Tangia Riley-Codrington won three games during her match at No. 2, (2-6, 1-6), then both Jaime Edwards at No. 3 (0-6, 2-6) and Zholdakyeva at No. 6 (1-6, 1-6) each won two games in their respective matches. In the unfinished ones, Grlj at No. 4 had won four games and was down just 2-3 in the second set. Kaome at No. 5 won three games and was down just 2-3 in the second set. Then Konstantinov at the top flight had won three games and was ahead 2-1 in the second set.

During the second match later in the day, Tulane again jumped out by claiming the doubles point. Konstantinov and Riley-Codrington competed at the top flight, while Edwards and Zholdakyeva competed at No. 2 with both winning a game before falling, 1-6. At No. 3, Kaome and Grlj fell by the score of 0-6.

In singles, Konstantinov made a push during her match at the top flight after falling behind, 1-6, she rallied with four games in the second set, 4-6. Zholdakyeva won five games during her match at No. 6 (3-6, 2-6). Edwards won four games during her match at No. 3 that included three games in the opening set (3-6, 1-6). Kaome was two games at No. 5 (0-6, 2-6), so did Grlj at No. 4 before retiring in the second set (2-6, 0-2). Rounding out the singles matches was Riley-Codrington at No. 2 who won a game in the first set (1-6, 0-6).

Alcorn will now prepare for their home opener on Thursday, January 28 against Jacksonville State starting at 12 p.m.
