LORMAN, Miss. – Mikaela Konstantinova made it a strong home opener in her singles match as she picked up the win at the top flight. The Alcorn State University women's tennis team opened the home portion of their schedule Thursday dropping a 6-1 match to Jacksonville State. The men's tennis match was postponed.
Konstantinova fought through a tough opening set to claim the win in straight sets. Playing at the top singles spot, she was able to win a hard-fought 6-4 first set and then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second set. Kimberly Kaome won five games during her match at No. 4 before falling just short, 3-6, 2-6. Aizat Zholdakyeva picked up two games during her match at No. 3, 1-6, 1-6. Tangia Riley-Codrington fell in her match at No. 2, 0-6, 0-6. Jacksonville State then won No. 5 and No. 6 singles by forfeit.
In doubles, Konstantinova and Riley-Codrington played at the top flight and fell, 0-6. Zholdakyeva and Kaome played at No. 2 and picked up a game before falling, 1-6.
It's a busy week for the Alcorn women's tennis team as they will turn around and play two matches this Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana State at 11 a.m. and then against Stephen F. Austin later that day at 3 p.m.
