Braves Open Three-Game Homestand This Saturday Against Southern

LORMAN, Miss. – Winners of three-straight, the Alcorn State University men's basketball team will look to keep the momentum going this Saturday as they will open a three-game homestand starting with Southern at 1 p.m. inside Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Alcorn picked up a solid road victory last time out against Alabama State taking the 57-52 win. Troymain Crosby continued his strong play scoring 19 points to lead all-scorers. He also grabbed six rebounds and tallied two steals. Kurk Lee reached double-figures with 14 points, he also had a team-high six assists that includes the key assist on Myson Lowe's go-ahead three-pointer. Tyree Corbett led the way on the boards with 11 and also added six points. Alabama State came back in the second half to take a two-point lead with 38 seconds to play, just to watch Lowe push the Braves to the win with his clutch three-pointer with 23 seconds to play. Alcorn then had a big defensive stop to force a turnover and free throws by Lee and Crosby sealed the win. The Braves closed the game on a 7-0 run.

Crosby leads the team averaging 19.1 points per game, he also averages 4.3 rebounds per contest. Lee is second on the team averaging 12.2 points per game and Corbett adds 9.4. Corbett leads the team in rebounds at 6.1 per game, Lee has a team-high 23 assists and Byron Joshua has a team-best 10 steals. Anthony Fairley has sent back six blocks.

As a team, Alcorn enters the week 3-6 overall and 3-1 in SWAC play averaging 65.4 points per game, making 203-508 (40) from the field, 53-179 (29.6) from three and 130-181 (71.8) from the foul line. Opponents average 80.5 points, making 240-489 (49.1) from the field, 73-194 (37.6) from three and 172-259 (66.4) from the foul line.

Alcorn ranks second in the SWAC in turnovers per game (14.9), third in the conference and 126th nationally in free throw percentage (71.8), third in the conference and 102nd nationally in offensive rebounds per game (11.0), third in the conference in turnover margin (-1.0), fourth in the conference in free throws made (130), fourth in the conference in three point field goals per game (5.9), fourth in the conference in win-loss percentage (33.3), fifth in the conference and 67th nationally in fewest fouls (194), fifth in the conference and 46th nationally in fewest turnovers (134), fifth in the conference in scoring offense per game (65.4), fifth in the conference in three point field goals made (53) and fifth in the conference in turnovers forced per game (13.89).


Crosby ranks third in the SWAC and 51st nationally in points per game (19.1), third in the conference in free throws made (40), sixth in the conference in field goal percentage (46.4), sixth in the conference in free throw percentage (76.9). Corbett is fifth in the conference and 107th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (2.56), seventh in the conference in double-doubles (1) and eighth in the conference in rebounds per game (6.1). Lee is fourth in the conference in free throw percentage (83.3), fifth in the conference in assists (3.8) and fifth in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). Joshua is 10th in the conference in assists per game (2.3). Fairley is ninth in the conference in blocked shots per game (0.8) and Oddyst Walker is 11th in the conference in steals per game (1.3).

Entering the week, Prairie View A&M leads the SWAC standings at 4-0, followed by Alabama A&M and Jackson State both tied at 2-0, Alcorn State follows at 3-1, Southern is 3-2, Grambling State at 3-3, UAPB at 2-4, Texas Southern at 1-2, Alabama State at 2-5 and Mississippi Valley State at 0-5.

Southern enters the week 3-6 overall and 3-2 in SWAC play having fallen at the buzzer last time out at Alabama State (66-64). The game before that at Alabama A&M they suffered a 68-58 setback. The Jaguars are 2-0 at home and 1-5 on the road this season. Southern holds a 40-20 record in the series and have won three-straight including both meetings last year taking the 71-57 win in Lorman and the 93-82 win in Baton Rouge. Alcorn won back-to-back meetings in the series prior to Southern's three-game winning streak picking up the win in the second meeting in 2017-18 and then the first meeting in 2018-19.

Ahsante Shivers leads the team averaging 10.1 points per game. Damiree Burns is at 9.3 and Jayden Saddler adds 9.1. Harrison Henderson leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game and adds 8.7 points per contest. Southern averages 68.5 points per game, making 219-519 (42.2) from the field, 49-149 (32.9) from three and 130-192 (67.7) from the foul line. Opponents average 73.1 points per game, making 223-525 (42.5) from the field, 66-194 (34) from three and 146-219 (66.7) from the foul line.
