LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's tennis team played a pair of matches on Saturday in their home openers facing both Southeastern Louisiana State and Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Lions won the first match, 6-1, and then the Ladyjacks took the second match, 4-0.
In the first match against Southeastern State, Aizat Zholdakyeva picked up the point for the Lady Braves as she rolled to the 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3. Mikaela Konstantinova again playing at the top flight nearly made it two singles wins for Alcorn before she dropped a tough, 4-6, 5-7 match. Stefany Grlj picked up five games during her match at No.5 before falling, 3-6, 2-6. Kimberly Kaome tallied four games in the first set before a 4-6, 0-6 setback. Tangia Riley-Codrington then wrapped up the last singles match grabbing three games before falling at No. 2, 2-6, 1-6. The Lady Lions claimed the last point at No. 6 singles via forfeit.
In doubles, Konstantinova and Zholdakyeva played at the top flight, while Kaome and Grlj played at No. 2 and each won a pair of games before falling by the same scores of 2-6.
In the second match of the day, Alcorn went against Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Braves made things very competitive in doubles play with Zholdakyeva and Konstantinova playing at the top flight and then Riley-Codrington and Kaome playing at No. 2. Both doubles teams were able to claim four games before falling by the same scores of 4-6.
In singles, the teams played just to clinch and the Ladyjacks already started ahead 3-0 picking up forfeit wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Riley-Codrington played at the top flight and came close to forcing a third set before falling in a pair of close-set scores of 3-6, 6-7.
