LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will look to get back on track Monday evening as it ends its week-long hiatus against the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M at 5:30 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
The Lady Braves (5-9, 5-5 SWAC) are ranked tenth in the nation regarding steals per game, leading the conference with an average of 11.4 per night. The purple and gold are just outside the top-25 for turnovers forced a game at 19.86, its turnover margin (3.00) places four slots clear of the top-50 and the girls from Lorman are among the top-100 teams in fewest turnovers given up on offense (236).
The defensive duo of
Kirdis Clark and
Cayla Obillo have fronted the charge in the steals department, placing third and eighth in the SWAC, respectively, in steals per game. Clark averages 2.29 takeaways while Obillo swipes 1.86 per ballgame.
Clark is currently the only Lady Brave to be averaging double-figure scoring a night, topping the squad with 11.9 points per game and Obillo is the club's assist leader at 30.
Deja Mitchell is the club's best rebounder to date, bringing down 5.9 boards per contest, the ninth-highest total in the league.
Diamond Hall has accounted for nearly 40-percent of the team's 18 blocks on the campaign, rejecting a team-best seven.
Alabama A&M (7-3, 5-2 SWAC) is currently holding down third place in the league and took down both Troy (80-69) and Nicholls (67-61) in non-conference action.
The Lady Bulldogs have been one of the most disciplined teams in the NCAA, ranking among the top-20 in fewest fouls (160) and fewest turnovers committed (153).
The maroon and white are also stout on the defensive end of the floor, placing top-40 for rebounds per game (41.60), top-55 for field-goal percentage allowed (37.0) and top-60 for points allowed per game (59.2) to go along with a top-75 mark in scoring margin (8.1).
Standout Dariauna Lewis does it all for AAMU, slotting at fourth nationally in rebounds per game (12.4) and sixth in defensive rebounds a game (9.0) as well as placing top-15 in field-goal percentage (57.8), top-35 in double-doubles (8) and top-45 in blocks per game (2.00).
Lewis leads the SWAC in points per game with an average of 15.4 plus Deshawna Harper comes in at fifth with 14.8.
Harper is the club's sharpshooter from deep, averaging 2.60 triples per game to place second in the league and top-45 in the NCAA with the third-highest percentage in the conference (34.2).
Nigeria Jones is the floor general, leading the Southwestern Athletic Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.36) and assists per game (4.9), ranking top-45 in the NCAA for the latter.
NOTES
- The Lady Braves have gone 28-20 all-time against the Lady Bulldogs but AAMU has won six straight in the series including all three contests in 2019-20.
