LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program outscored Alabama A&M by nine in the extra frame (12-3) including a run of eight straight to begin overtime to secure a hard-fought 73-64 win.
The Lady Braves (6-9, 6-5 SWAC) originally thought they had won the game with four seconds left in regulation after a
Kirdis Clark contested floater in the lane fell through. AAMU's Dariauna Lewis had other plans as she was able to use a screen to get to the basket for an easy layup to knot the score at 61-61 as the clock hit zeroes.
Coach Kilbert's squad got most of its production from the dynamic duo of Clark and
Cayla Obillo who accounted for 55-percent of the 73 points scored by the Purple and Gold.
Clark set a new season-high in points scored (21) to go along with tying her career-best of three triples and tying for the game-high of three steals.
Obillo went off for a personal-best 19 points on the evening as well as contributing three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Deja Mitchell set new career-highs in a Lady Braves uniform in rebounds (10), assists (3) and steals (3) while rejecting her second block of the year.
Diamond Hall had a well-balanced performance, notching seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Alabama A&M (7-4, 5-3 SWAC) saw superstar Dariauna Lewis make the difficult plays look routine, pouring in a game-high 25 points and 17 boards on 9-of-12 (.750) shooting to register a double-double.
Deshawna Harper came one rebound shy of a double-double herself, going for 14 points and nine boards while connecting on the visitors' only three deep balls of the evening.
Alcorn will host Senior Day on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Alabama State as it looks to send
LaRae Rascoe,
Kyeonia Harris,
Jamaysha Bernard,
Deja Mitchell,
Kirdis Clark,
Nyenkeer Malwal and
Aysha Kirkland out as winners while lacing it up on "The Reservation" one last time.
