LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will attempt to end its home slate on a high note as it looks to topple the red-hot Lady Hornets of Alabama State.
The Lady Braves (6-9, 6-5 SWAC) are ranked ninth in the nation regarding steals per game, leading the conference with an average of 11.4 per night. The purple and gold are just outside the top-25 for turnovers forced a game at 19.87, its turnover margin (3.53) places inside the top-50 and the girls from
Lorman are among the top-100 teams in fewest turnovers given up on offense (245).
The defensive duo of
Kirdis Clark and
Cayla Obillo have fronted the charge in the steals department, placing second and eighth in the SWAC, respectively, in steals per game. Clark averages 2.33 takeaways while
Obillo swipes 1.80 per ballgame.
Clark is currently the only Lady Brave to be averaging double-figure scoring a night, topping the squad with 12.6 points per game and
Obillo is the club's assist leader at 32.
Deja Mitchell is the club's best rebounder to date, bringing down 6.2 boards per contest, the ninth-highest total in the league.
Diamond Hall has accounted for just over 35-percent of the team's 19 blocks on the campaign, rejecting a team-best seven.
Alabama State (10-2, 10-2 SWAC) sits just a half-game back of Jackson State for first place, having won six straight contests before falling at Southern yesterday.
The Lady Hornets are the second-stingiest three-point defense in the NCAA, allowing a paltry 22.8 percent from long range. They also place among the nation's top-50 for three-point percentage themselves, converting 35.1 percent of their shots from downtown.
The black and gold are the best team in the conference in three-pointers per game (5.9), field-goal percentage (45.3), points per game (72.8) and scoring margin (10.0).
Ayana Emmanuel slots in among the three-best in the SWAC for points per game (16.4) and steals a night (2.25) while placing fifth field-goal percentage (45.7) plus sixth from the charity stripe (76.1).
Shmya Ward does most of her work in the post for ASU as the six-footer is third in the league with 9.3 boards per game and field-goal percentage (55.1) as well as fifth in points per game (16.0) and sixth for blocks a contest (1.58).

- Alcorn has lost twice as many games to Alabama State as they have won, coming away victorious only 30 times in 90 meetings.
