Lady Braves Impress In Coach Larry’s Debut Despite Defeat

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's soccer program led for nearly 70 minutes against and did not trail until the final whistle blew but ultimately Lady Jaguars prevailed in double overtime, 2-1.

It did not take long for new Head Coach Kevin Larry to make his mark on the program as the Purple and Gold have shown massive improvement already just 90 minutes into his inaugural campaign on "The Reservation".

Freshman defender Navani Davis could not have asked for a much better collegiate debut, rocketing a goal past the keeper on her only shot attempt of the day, giving the Lady Braves a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute.

Goalkeeper Mikayla Shaughnessy was also superb in her first game at Alcorn as the Southwest Baptist transfer held SU scoreless for the first 86-plus minutes of the match while only allowing the second goal to be scored after 108 minutes of action.

Mireya Gonzalez, Emily Serrato and Rosalina Santoro each registered a shot for the girls from Lorman.

Southern outshot Alcorn by a wide margin (23-4) but the Lady Brave defense stood strong all afternoon. Defenders Shalisha King, Niamh Magill, Lauren Hill and Caitlyn Dungee clamped down, surrendering just four shots on goal (.174 SOG%) and came within two minutes of earning a draw before Cordney Armstrong broke Brave Nation's collective hearts by hitting the back of the net in the 109th minute.

With the heart stopping victory, the Lady Jags pushed their all-time series advantage to 18-4-1.

The Purple and Gold will look to rewrite the history books on Sunday afternoon as they welcome Jackson State to Vicksburg in an effort to notch its first ever win in the series over 25 prior tussles.
