Jackson State Uses Pair of Big Quarters to Get Past Lady Braves

LORMAN, Miss. – Outside of the second and third quarters, the Alcorn State University women's basketball team held a one-point advantage in quarters one and four. At the end, Jackson State was able to use a plus-20 edge in the second and third quarters to claim the 73-54 Southwestern Athletic Conference game over the Lady Braves Saturday inside Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Cayla Obillo led the way for Alcorn (4-8, 4-4 SWAC) tallying 16 points on 6-9 shooting, along with a 2-3 effort from three and 2-2 at the foul line. She also dished out three assists, added two steals and a rebound in 29 minutes. Kirdis Clark recorded nine points on 3-9 shooting which included a three and went 2-2 at the foul line. She grabbed a rebound, added an assist and swiped two steals. Diamond Hall had a strong all-around game leading the team in steals with three and blocks with two, along with tallying four points and grabbing three rebounds.

For the game, Alcorn shot well from the field making 21-49 (42.9), as well as from three going 6-13 (46.2) and added a 6-8 clip (75) at the foul line. The Lady Braves held the edge in shooting percentage in all three (tying for the free throw percentage), but Jackson State (8-5, 7-1 SWAC) held big advantages on second chance points (11-0) and points in the paint (36-20).

The Lady Braves jumped out to their first lead of the game just over two minutes in when Tyginae Wright hit a three-point and LaRae Rascoe added a jumper for the 5-3 lead. The lead stretched to three at 9-6 on a layup by Diamond Hall. The teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the quarter before Alcorn closed the scoring over the first 10 minutes with a jumper by Obillo for the 21-19 lead.

The Lady Tigers opened the second quarter strong going on an 11-0 run to move ahead 30-21. Alcorn had the lead down to seven before Jackson State closed the quarter outscoring the Lady Braves by four to take the 43-32 lead into halftime.

It was a low scoring third quarter with the teams combining for 25 points as Jackson State used the 16-9 scoring edge to open up a 59-41 lead entering the fourth.

The fourth quarter was closer with the Lady Tigers holding a slight 14-13 lead as Alcorn was only able to get as close as 16 in the final frame before Jackson State claimed the victory.

Dayzsha Rogan led Jackson State with 21 points, while Keshuna Luckett and Ameshya Williams each added 12 points apiece to give the Lady Tigers three in double-figures. It was a big game for Williams as she grabbed 15 rebounds for the double-double and went 6-11 from the field. Elexis Peyton just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.

For the game, Jackson State went 25-60 (41.7) from the field, 5-15 (33.3) from three and 18-24 (75) from the foul line.

Alcorn will return to action this coming Monday when they host Grambling State beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Davey L. Whitney Complex.
