LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will look to avenge its two regular season losses to the Lady Jags, who it will face in the Quarterfinals at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
The Lady Braves (7-12, 7-8 SWAC) ended the regular season strong with a four-point victory at Prairie View A&M, 57-53.
The Purple and Gold finished the regular season tenth rated defense in terms of steals per game, snatching an average of 11.5 a night. Alcorn also ranked top-15 in turnovers forced a game (20.42) and top-30 for turnover margin (4.05).
Kirdis Clark led the league in total steals with 43, was second for steals average at 2.26 and led the Lady Braves in points per game (13.7).
Cayla Obillo also found her way onto the backend of the conference leaderboard for steals per game, checking in at ninth with 1.84 to go along with topping the team in assists (48).
Deja Mitchell was the best rebounder on the club as the only one with triple digit boards (115) for an average of 6.4.
Southern (11-10, 11-4 SWAC) won three in-a-row and five of its final six contests with its only defeat coming opposite Alabama A&M by two, 78-76.
The light blue and gold were 13th in the nation for both turnover margin (6.33) and turnovers forced per game (20.67), top-25 for three-point defense (26.5) and top-30 for steals per contest (10.2).
SUBR had one representative on the All-SWAC Second Team in Genovea Johnson. Johnson led the Southwestern Athletic Conference in free throw attempts (117) and second for makes (80), topping the squad with 13.1 points per game.
Two Southern players averaged exactly ten points per contest; Nakia Kincey and Amani Mcwain. Kinsey was SUBR's leading stealer as well.
The only other Lady Jag among the conference leaders was Taneara Moore, slotting in at eighth with 1.86 steals per night.
NOTES
- Southern swept the season series this year but trails the Alcorn all-time by a count of 49-34.
- The last time these two programs met in the conference tournament in 2017 when the Lady Jaguars defeated the Lady Braves (73-67) in Baton Rouge.
