Lady Braves Welcome Texas Southern For Regular Season Finale

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program has one match left against Texas Southern to finish up its regular season, SWAC-only slate Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Braves (2-6, 2-6 SWAC) are coming off a dominating performance over Mississippi Valley State and will look to start its first winning streak of the campaign heading into the SWAC Tournament.

Alcorn State is among the conference's top-three serving squads, averaging 1.62 aces per set.

Mikenzie Young-Mullins is the top server on the club as far as statistics are concerned, averaging 0.38 service aces per set to place sixth in the SWAC and has seen ten aces hit the floor over 26 sets.

Young-Mullins is also the club's best attacker, fronting the Purple and Gold with 71 kills (2.73 per set).

Senior Jasmine Chambers has been as consistent as they come, leading the Lady Braves with an average of 3.58 assists per set and will in all likelihood end her career with the seventh-most assists in program history (1,223).

Fellow senior Mae Lewis is second on the team in hitting percentage (.147), third for points per set (2.23) and kills per set (2.13) while also blocking three balls.

Mariah Wilmoth has been passed the defensive torch from all-time great Fiapaipai Iosia this season, topping the Purple and Gold with 3.46 digs per set (90 total).

Scouting the Texas Southern Lady Tigers (1-6, 1-6 SWAC)

The Maroon and Silver have been competitive on most nights and claimed a win over Grambling State in five sets on Saturday.

Thalia Cordero-Moreno is the Lady Tigers' top offensive weapon with 2.75 kills and 3.15 points per set while Danielle Lilley is not too far behind at 2.38 kills and 2.44 points.

Aeris Ramsey has been one of the better helpers in the SWAC for 2021, sending up 110 assists for an average of 4.58.

TSU is one of the best defensive teams in the NCAA, clocking in at 22nd nationally for digs per set (18.12). Four separate Texas Southerners average at least three digs per set, led by Kyira Porch's 5.25, and the team has a double-digit blocker in Indyah Rideaux at 13 so far.

The Lady Braves and Lady Tigers have met 26 times on the volleyball court with Texas Southern fronting the series at 16-10 heading into Thursday's tilt.
