Late Rally, Seven-Run Second Propels Alabama State Past Alcorn

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –  The Alcorn State University baseball program had a six-run lead heading into the seventh inning stretch of game one but seven unanswered Hornets runs spoiled the celebration in a 10-9 defeat while ASU won the second game, 11-1.

The Braves (5-8, 5-7 SWAC) came within five outs of winning its first game over Alabama State since 2014 but a late surge by the home squad snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Tristin Garcia was a hitting machine in game one, hitting .800 (4-for-5) with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI plus a steal in game two.

Tyler Daniels had a well-rounded afternoon as well, slapping three hits in the first contest, swiping two bases and being the only Brave with multiple RBIs (3) including the only run in game two courtesy of a sacrifice fly.

Jamil Betancourt had his finest day in Purple and Gold as the true freshman hit his first career home run, RBI and double.

Tyler Smith and Kyle Jenkins each roped a double with Jenkins showing off his "catcher speed" with a stolen base while Kobe Butts had a steal of his own.

Alabama State (9-11, 6-3 SWAC) had nearly 50% of its hits in game one go for extra bases with four triples, two doubles and a homer.

Alcorn's lead in the series has shrunk to 16 with the sweep, ahead of Alabama State 133-117-1.

Coach Richardson and the Baseball Braves will take the next nine days off before its next game . . . a rematch with the fourth-ranked Rebels of Ole Miss in Oxford on April 6.
