Hunt Homers In Doubleheader Loss At TSU

HOUSTON, Texas. – The Alcorn State University softball program received a two-run deep fly from Marsha Hunt but fell by scores of 8-2 and 5-2 versus Texas Southern Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Braves (3-12, 1-3 SWAC) scattered 15 hits over the twinbill but were only able to muster four runs, two of which came off Hunt's long ball.

Four Alcorn players contributed multi-hit outings as Hannah Dukes (2) and Desirea Lindsey (2) accomplished the feat in game one while Chloey Morgan (2) and Ashley Arnold (2) did the same in game two.

Genise Wells posted a hit in each contest plus adding an RBI and two walks to her stat line in the opener.

Lindsey drove in the other RBI in the first game to go along with a stolen bag in the second one.

Texas Southern (7-12, 5-1 SWAC) got more superb pitching from its staff as Jasmine Gendorf, Lailah Bell and Chelsea Baxter joined forces to throw 14.0 innings while allowing four runs and three walks despite the Lady Braves putting the ball in the air more often than not (25 fly outs to 14 ground outs).

Game 1 | L, 2-8

Things did not go to well for the ladies in Purple and Gold in the opening two frames, falling behind by four.

The fourth inning was a different story as Wells patiently walked to bring home Hunt with the bases loaded while Lindsey lined an RBI single to left-center to close the margin to two, 4-2.

The rest of the scoring came from the Maroon and Silver with Dary Haslam responsible for three of four runs, hitting a two-RBI triple and RBI single up the middle as the final score was 8-2, TSU.

Game 2 | L, 2-5

The first inning of game two was promising for Alcorn as Hunt sent a two-RBI tater over the fence to dead-centerfield, scoring Amari Ramsey and giving Coach Rankin's squad a 2-0 advantage.

While TSU scored one in the bottom half, Alcorn still held a 2-1 edge going into the bottom of the fourth.

The Lady Tigers dropped a four-spot in the mirror inning to move in front 5-2 which is where the final tally would remain, giving Texas Southern a series sweep.

Texas Southern improved to 21-9 in the all-time series history between the two softball programs.
